My theory is that Spanish people went through absolute penury during the Civil War and afterwards, and it goes against their pride to buy things that have been used by somebody else. They probably think that getting something new, but poor quality, is preferable to something better quality but used. Remember the whole idea of the "hidalgo" where the Spanish are considered noble and proud. They are the proudest nationality I have ever met. I live in Catalonia and here people seem more willing to buy things secondhand, they are less "proud" and more willing to save a few pennies (hence their reputation for being the "Scots" of Spain, with apologies for the cheap stereotype). We have a child and have borrowed baby items from other (English or Dutch) families, but most Spanish would never dream of doing this. They prefer to have everything brand spanking new in order to show it off on their paseo.

I have the same dilemma, a room full of "stuff" and no home for it...

PS I found binbags full of children's games and toys by the contenedores last week, in perfect, almost unused condition. They had been thrown away by the primary school having a clearout! In England you would take this stuff to a charity shop. It is just a tragic waste of resources, especially when there are people who have so little.

I used to love having a rummage around in some of the charity shops in the UK. I know they can sell a load of old rubbish, but it was great when you discovered that Chanel handbag or original Burbury overcoat and got both for less than a tenner. I miss that.

On more than one occasion I have thought about opening up one of those second hand shops....the ones where you bring in your old clothes, etc and whatever the shop sells it for, you get 50%. But I've never been brave enough to make the leap as I fear it could be one of those things that never gets off the ground here.

Despite what we have said I think it would work Veleta, as long as you only accepted good quality stuff and you live in an area where there are at least some foreigners to get things moving. The charity shop Humana is always packed out, and there are people of all nationalities in there. One of the upsides of immigration!

Ah, therein lies the problem. I'd be totally reliant on Spanish custom, and I have an inkling that they might just turn their noses up at the idea....even in the middle of a "crisi" when everyone is allegedly strapped for cash.

our local charity shops do that - they sell your stuff & you get a cut


about a year ago a 'second hand' mother & baby shop opened here - I thought it was brilliant idea, especially in the 'crisis' - looked like some good quality stuff at reasonable prices (no good to me with my two big girls though)

....until a womble like me comes along, sorts the wheat from the chaff & furnishes their house & terraces from it all! I've had pristine pictures, a perfectly good tea/coffee set, countless chairs, a formica 60s style table & chairs set, a barely used rocking horse, etc etc .... and that's before you count the wood to make into kindling, the irrigation piping, .......

When I move south, I am planning on checking out the Tivoli Sunday boot sale, is it recommended? If only I could have a stall there before moving down! Seems a bit expensive to move things down there and then sell them for peanuts!

Don't know what Tivoli charge stallholders, there are (guesstimate) 20+ but I've never seen more than about that number. There's a far better one, apparently, Wednesdays I think, also in Benalmadena not far from Tivoli but hopefully someone else who knows will come along to confirm! It was recommended to me by a friend who used to run an antiques shop and has a definite eye both for a bargain and for quality, so probably worth a look.

Tivoli used to be good on Sundays, but the new owners shut it down for a year or so and it has never picked up again like it was.
The one on wednesdays is on the Feria ground at the top end of Paloma Park, not as good as it used to be though, everyone wants to pay half what it is priced at.
The biggest one is at the Feria ground in Fuengirola, but is a job to get a pitch.

Funnily enough a friend of mine gets really cheesed off with freecycle in the UK. He reckons that despite living on impoverished Humberside, he has difficulty giving stuff away. People will agree to collect stuff, then never turn up at the agreed time. Of course it may be because he lives near a wharp hole :ohmy: Or maybe they do turn up and he's a serial killer :ohmy::ohmy::ohmy:

I did successfully sell my air-con unit on Segundamano, but it is EXTREMELY slow compared to say eBay in the UK. I got hardly any hits at all and the item took about 6 weeks to sell.
