Getting a Credit Card from another bank.

My wife and myself are holidaying in the USA later this year. I already have a credit card from my own bank, Solbank and also intend to ask them for a pre-paid card also. However, knowing how important a CC is in America, I'm looking to try to get another one as a form of "back up" in case something goes array with my current CC. I don't want to change banks so I'm wondering if anyone has gone through the process of getting another CC from a bank other than their own.
Any advice please? Thanks.

I have had several credit cards over my lifetime, all from different banks. It may be that the current climate of fraud etc is causing some banks to perhaps limit their exposure or harden their criteria. Barclays have closed several Barclaycard accounts, mine included just because, they say, that I am no longer a UK resident. No problem, my use of CCs is now rare.
However, in response to your query, I have always found MBNA to be good, and they are, I believe a USA based entity. HSBC are a world bank of note too. Or perhaps you wish to limit involvement to Spanish banks. Santander seem keen to gain new clients but I am unsure of a requirement to be an account holder. Solbank are now of course part of Sabadell. I would not recommend Bankia! I cannot speak for others like BBVA etc.
I certainly agree with your comments about back-up.

I agree with the OP and your post seems to confirm that it's quite difficult (unlike in UK) to get a credit card from somewhere that you don't already have an account.

Mmmmm.... Thanks for the replies, unsure if I will be able to get what I would like to have.
Thanks again though.

Assuming you CC is MasterCard then why not ask Solbank for a Visa card as well (or vice versa)? Most banks will do both.

Thanks. Looked at one Amex.Com site and the application had a mandatory field where you had to put in details of airline loyalty cards, for example British Airways, Iberia etc. Went on to Amex.es and these fields weren't mandatory so I'll get on my PC tomorrow or do the application. On my iPad at the moment and I find filling out long forms a bit of a pain on it.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

No worries. Please be advised some places do not accept Amex, but most do.

Should have anticipated problems. Filling out the online application form I was asked for my NIE number (no problem). I was then asked for the expiry date of my residencia card!!
Digging out my green form which I rarely use or even look at I saw that in the bottom right hand corner there is an expiry date of 2008.
So, I'm obviously stuck.
I suspect I should have applied at some point for a residencia card but believed my green form was sufficient. Now believe I am wrong. Also didn't realise my green form has an expiry date!
Really can't face the prospect of going through a process of another residencia application.
Has anyone gone through it to get a residencia card?
Thanks.

Are you sure about the expiry date? My form is dated 16/10/2007 at the right hand end, but that is the issue date. There is, I believe, no expiry date for an EU citizen

Despite that, I'm still asked for an expiry date on the application form which I can't provide and it still refers to a tarjeta, which leads me to believe it expects residencia card information something I don't have. May just scan and send them a copy of the green form. Worth a go.
Thanks for the response,
