Default Georgeous Galicia !

Wanting to leave England ? THEN DO IT !... and move to Galicia, NorthWest Spain.
I have recently discovered the Emerald jewel in North Spains crown. A vast, unspoilt, green and very pleasant land where nothing is rushed, overcrowded, expensive or watched by cameras !

This is peasant country. Agriculture still thrives here amongst numerous beautiful lakes, forests and uncongested roads. Peace and quiet rules here. The people are the friendliest of all of Spain and are always more than willing to help and guide you .

I bought a 200 year old 400m2 farmhouse with an acre of land to renovate, for next to nothing and for the price of a 1 bed flat in some grotty, little, subburban city in England i will have a 4 bed, 3 bath, 4 recep. home plus terrace, garden and more !

If you enjoy the daily grind of getting to work at a snails pace and paying a fortune for the privilage, being monitered 24/7, crime, poverty, huge taxes, huge food and fuel bills, a collapsing society with no propper governing and a total lack of quality of life in general, then stay in England. If you feel inspired by what i have written above, then check out the numerous estate agents on the web..... I, will never look back now !

My aim was to rejuvinate my photography when I moved here but regrettably I have failed dismally so far

I have all the equipment, just haven't had the time to use it yet

My daughter has a degree in fine art and a lot she has done is in the same sort of style as some of yours.

My favourite is downstairs, I'll try and take a pic of it in the light tomorrow and post it up

I see he sold his balls!

Welcome to Galicia, we found the place some 5 years ago. Moved 4 years ago almost to the day. We could not be bothered with a ruin when we could purchase this house without the hassle of renovation.

Seems that we are getting a band of expats here in Galicia now.

Before you start reforming it would be good for you to pop into the Ayuntamiento. To introduce yourself and to see what permissions you will need to undertake the works.
We understand the Xunta has made some money (grants) available to restore old stone built houses. Maybe you should contact them too.

PS can you give us a link to the web site where you bought the house from..more specially we would like to see the house...being nosey and all that!

Yes there are grants available but like everything there are rules. For instance if you want to replace your roof you cannot apply for a grant until you have been a resident for 3 years. There are other grants available, for instance installing a septic tank, but it takes two years for them to make a decision. In this instance it would be wise to apply for the grant and then if the grant comes through it would be a bonus in a couple of years. We went through this a year ago so things might have changed. And yes it is very important that permissions are sought for changing windows, roof, practically anything. I know in Galicia you have to obtain permission to repaint the exterior of your house - even if it is the same colour.

Yep we understood there could be delays and paperwork like you have said. We got some good advice from a Spanish inmobiliaria. Hence purchasing a restored house.

Like this you mean?
http://media.lavozdegalicia.es/defau...M_VERTICAL.jpg

The above is near Vigo.

The above is a building built around a lamp post.

The above petrol station is situated alongside a famous Monastery on the Camino de Santiago and a main road.

http://media.lavozdegalicia.es/defau...M_APAISADA.jpg
The above is a electric meter and cables hanging of a wall. Handy to hang the washing out on!

The above photos from our local paper 'La Voz de Galicia'. They asked for photos of the worse places in Galicia. They were inundated but these are some of our favourites.
But as sporny says in reality this is a very green (and wet) part of Spain.
