Gas boiler

Hi, we have never had our gas boiler checked, and that needs rectifying. We’ve been getting flyers in our letterbox from different companies advertising themselves as gas checkers. I understand that many people have changed their boilers to electric. I’d appreciate thoughts on this. Thanks Kim

(1) I would ask a ;ocal plumber if he is gas qualified and then ask them to service the boiler. Or, perhaps, contact Repsol directly. I would never respond to such an advert

(2) We changed to electrice from gas for a number of reasons. The main reason was simply convenience.

Not a fan and never used gas but better get it checked soon. I wouldn't go with conventional electric water heater either and in Spain and Ireland we installed a stand alone heat pump water heater.
In Spain we have the smaller one https://www.aircon.panasonic.eu/GB_e...s/aquarea/dhw/

I am so glad I changed to electric much more convenient - no butano to lug around (OK some have city gas) no safety checks, modern elec ones are economical and cheaper to buy than gas, no flue/fumes....no brainer for me.

We did the same in our old house -no more risk of a gas bottle running out and the water going cold mid-shower! When we moved to an apartment we also changed the gas boiler for an electric one before moving in. We chose a Fleck Duo one which are more expensive to buy than the usual ones but slimline so it it fits inside a standard kitchen wall unit and it is economical to run.

Yes I opted for a Fleck Duo as well - works very well and slimline.

They should be checked every two years by law, in Catalonia this is done by a technician going to your house to check it and you being billed via your gas company.

Thanks all, we don’t have gas bottles , it’s main so that isn’t a problem. Is the electric cheaper to consume than gas?

I can only say that since moving from a property where we used gas (butano, not natural gas) for cooking and heating to an apartment which is all electric, our bills have been no higher overall.

The question is always how much electric or gas is used, just like different cars don't use the same amount of petrol? If you need electric to heat directly it will cost a lot more money.

Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Therefore, they can be two to three times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters.

i think if we changed to electric it would trip the electricity. Its so flakey in the house. Often trips when in shower & washing machine on then some one puts kettle on ....

I'm in a house with gas (for hot water only) after always using electric everywhere else I've lived and I must say that although it's inconvenient (lugging gas bottles around ain't fun) it does come out rather cheap at roughly one bottle per month with 4 persons in the household. Makes me wonder how much the electricity would cost if I were to switch.

"flakey".. its correct.. thats exactly what it is supposed to do.

If you are contracted for 2.2kw or 3.3kw etc etc.. and you have the washing machine and the kettle on, that can be 3kw - 4kw in one go.

Imagine if it didnt trip.. and everyone used whatever they wanted.. the cables would be melting and there would be fires all over the place...
