I bought Gambas in Mercadonna yesterday and got them out of the fridge too cook them just now. The heads had all gone black like they'd been contaminated with squid ink. Is this normal? They smelled very fresh (didn't smell much) and taste great. I'm eating them right now. Will I die do you think!

Actually I really recommend them! They were delicious and reminded me of the brown shrimp we used to catch on the easy coast of England in the cold cold north sea! Brrr.

The best ones I ever had in my entire life was in a small bar in Sanlucar, a huge plate full of the most delicious prawns I've ever tasted!

There's nothing like prawns straight from the sea. Boiled in seawater (from the sea-side of Spurn point)! Ohh and eaten with steaming hot buttered Samphire (From Sunk Island... Picked on the way home)! Followed by Bramble pie (from the River side of Spurn point... You had to watch out for the warden!). And unpasturised cream (from a little farm near Easington). I remember the haul, but forget the cold sea and dreary Humber;-)

But LOTS of strawberries from Huelva/Lepe... meaning there is much more than oranges and lemons here.
Surprisingly though we have so much citrus here... I dont understand why they dont grow limes..... or I dont think much grapefruit. Weird that limes seem to be imported, and surely a biz opportunity. But I know nothing about gardening! Makes my 'killer margarita's and my favourite cocktail harder to make.

Great! I can see a margarita event on the terrace

But do you think these are imported limes, or grown locally. Previously ive noticed the boxes are from abroad ( I forget but south America). I would suspect that it cant be much different to grow limes than say lemons...? But again my fingers are anything but green!
Thanks

They do not seem to be so common in Spain - hence the market price. One reason I can think of is that actually they are only green when unripe - when ripe they look just like lemons!
Since the public expect them to be green this could make harvesting more of a problem. The other difference is that, unlike most other citrus fruit, they drop when ripe.
Back to the Gambas question, we are on the Granada coast and you can buy local prawns here. They are small and sometimes have a bluish tinge to the head. They are incredibly expensive - like €65/kilo!
