I would never tell anyone not to live anywhere , we are all different , but Frigliana is a tourist attraction , we found our place (Chiclana) but plenty of tourists july / august here, if an area doesn't have tourists you would have to ask yourself why ?

We went on holiday there this year and stayed in Torrox Costa, Frigiliana was a beautiful place and there were a lot of tourists, house prices v. high aswell. I preferred Torrox Village as more quiet house prices a bit cheaper. Torrox was very spanish but a lot of building work going on so who knows in a few years. We are going to look at Costa Tropical when we next go over as villages along Coast quite cheap and apparently very Spanish Albunol (if that is the correct spelling is quite reasonable).

Frigiliana has changed out of all recognition since I first visited about 15 years ago. The original village centre is still very picturesque but there has been so much new development on the outskirts of the town which is still continuing.

I believe the non-Spanish population of Frigiliana is now about 30% which is just too high for me, I prefer somewhere the expat population is less concentrated. I also think Frigiliana is not very practical for everyday living, it is so steep (as Torrox pueblo is, too). Frigiliana does have hordes of tourists especially in the summer months but they mostly tend to be day trippers so it would be quieter in the evenings.

If you like that area I would suggest having a look at Algarobbo Pueblo which is a lovely village with good amenities - shops, banks, open air public swimming pool in the summer months, good access to the motorway and not far from the coast. My house is in Velez-Malaga which I love but it is a big town and not what everyone is looking for.

This is purely my opinion, but Albunol is a dump surrounded by plastic greenhouses. Most places on the Costa Tropical are like theat.

Went to Frigiliana once, lovely but expensive.

Torrox Pueblo is lovely and reasonably priced.

Try inland in the mountains unless you particularly want the coast.

From Motril to the border with Malaga there are virtually no plastic greenhouses. I think they are banned in Salobrena and Almunecar.

There are loads springing up west of Nerja now.

I was going east from Motril, I agree that there are far less greenhouses west of Motril.

Albonol is still a dump though.

I think most of the coast east of Motril is pretty awful and it gets even worse as soon as you get into Almeria. You can see the plastic greenhouses on the Google Earth pictures from space!

I'm not sure that it is classified as "Costa Tropical" - that seems to be the area around Almunecar and Motril and inland that actually grows all the "tropical" fruit.

Hi Tony,
frigiliana is lovely but it is a tourist village. Tours visit there reguarly and on a Thursday morning trying to get parked for the market is awful. There is lots of building but that is happening everywhere. Not far is a lovely village, I am loathe to say it's name as I love it to bits and would like to keep it secret.......but just for you....Competa, inland off the motorway past Algarobbo and Sayalonga and up and onwards to Competa. It has many nationalities and they change throughout the year. Well worth a visit as it is so close to Frigiliana.
From the day we drove into the village and then sat in the plaza we knew that was where we would end up buting a house, and we did.
good luck with your search.

Colmenar is a very typical Spanish village, and is known as the capital of Los Montes de Malaga. However the access to the village is excellent and it takes only 25 minutes to drive to Malaga City, or 35 minutes to the airport or beaches. There are some expats of various nationalities but the population is predominently Spanish and the village has every amenity. The scenery is stunning - I have been living here for three years now and have never been back to the UK. My village house is far sale in the real estate section - but only because I feel brave enough now to start on a rebuilding project of another village house nearby.
