I've been looking at the newly introduced Humax Freesat 'Freetime' receiver.
In addition to other features not available on the older Foxsat model I see that it has access to the BBC iPlayer and 7 day catchup facilities for all channels.
Am I correct in assuming that these services are all delivered via satellite (an obvious assumption for me!) and therefore no UK IP address is necessary to access these and other facilities?

The existing Humax gets BBC iPlayer and ITV Player. It requires an Internet connection so it would know your IP. For some reason ITV player on the Humax doesn't seem to care as I can get it on my Humax.

I can play BBC I player but not ITV on my PC
ITV tells me it is not available in my region.

I certainly do not have a TV license

Yes Fred, thanks for that, I just wondered if, by some advancement in the technology, the catchup services on the new Freetime boxes would be be delivered via satellite rather that an internet connection. This facility is supposed to be expanded from BBC & ITV channels to Channels 4 & 5 soon, but I suppose they too will be delivered via internet rather than my hoped for satellite link!

Freesat 'Freetime' gets its live channels via satellite, and its catch up services via an ADSL line.

Catch up services are geoblocked - meaning you need a UK IP address to access the services.

(OK ITV catchup does not play by trhe rules, but then there is hardly anytihng worth catching up on ITV!)

Nothing to do with license fee - which is a UK tax on TV reception equipment.
It is geoblocked for broadcast rights ownership issues.

Thanks for that. As I knew/know little about the new receiver, I just hoped (in vain!) that Freesat would live up to its name and deliver these services via satellite. I appreciate though that for technical reasons this would be a big ask at this time. Maybe one day!

Fred assuming you are in the UK, looking at TV Licensing site so long as it is Catch up TV (you are viewing after the actual program is shown on TV) you do not require a TV Licence. If however you are using phone computer etc and watching the TV live as shown on television you do require a licence. How they would be able to know?

In the UK, if you have a TV capable of receiving live TV broadcasts, whether you use it for that or not, then it is a legal requirement to have a TV license, as many people have found to their cost.. about £1000 a time I believe. All houses are assumed to have a TV, and you will receive a letter in the post, in the first instance, asking you to get a TV license as they know from the licensing database which addresses do not have one.

There is an argument that even if you watch TV on your laptop via the internet you require a TV licence!

Mike yes I understand that and that is if you have a TV tuner be it in the TV or Via say a freeview/freesat box via a monitor or via computer phone etc and it is streamed live. However if you are
viewing as catch up you do not need a licence. This is from the licensing site:

Q: When do you need a licence? Do you need one for watching TV using an iPlayer?

A: You need a TV Licence to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on television, irrespective of what channel you're watching, what device you are using (TV, computer, laptop, mobile phone or any other), and how you receive them (terrestrial, satellite, cable, via the internet or any other way).

You do not need a TV Licence if you are watching TV after it has been shown on television, eg TV programmes downloaded or streamed after broadcast.

All that is pretty irrelevant as we are talking about getting IPTV in Spain so UK licensing rules do not apply.
