The teacher that did the free classes set up a private class running for 8 weeks @ €30 for the course and €30 for books. A school in Aspe runs a course for differents levels about 1 and half hours a weeks form September to June.
Enrolments for these courses are usually with the town hall at the beginning of September.

thats an idea, about looking at the local schools to see if they offer any classes. I have also heard that the unversity may offer classes, perhaps thats something I should look into when i arrive.

Hondon: Do you know if this guy still offers these courses? €30 for 8 weeks seems true cheap to be true, no? Thats quite close to where I will be living for the first 10 weeks or so - near Monforte del Cid!

It is a lady that is doing the course, the town hall allow her to use the youth centre. They are group classes, numbers vary from 6 up to 20 depending on the demand and the class is for 2 hours per week. There was a class from October to December and another started January and ends this month. Not sure if one starts after Easter again or it may not be until September. Also unsure if you have to be on the padron for this area to actually attend the class. Aspe would be closer to you but that would mean waiting until September.

Don't know about Alicante, but there are free courses @ the town hall in Ciudad Quesada, with levels to suit beginner, intermediate and advanced.

I guess I can visit all of the local town halls when I arrive in spain and see if any offer free courses. I will be going o nthe pardon when i arrive.

A quick question about the pardon: Do you register on the pardon of a city i.e. Alicante, or of a town/village like Novelda/Monforte? Also, If i do register in Monforte, and I move, can I just simply get change which place I appear on the pardon?

You register at your local town hall.

If and when you move you need to re-register.

If you are a complete beginner check out Livemocha.com. The basic lessons are free and there is a very cool community of members that will correct your exercises and give you feedback. That should get you going till you move to Spain.

In Spain, take a look at the local schools in your area. Some of them offer free evening Spanish classes for non-Spanish speaking students and their parents. I don't know if you can still sit in if you don't have kids going to that school though. But, you can ask.

I've been having a good look at Livemocha the past couple of days. Yes, I can see it's great to get you started - but it is very South American Spanish & a lot of the vocab is completely different to Spanish Spanish;)

Courses are open to all adults. They start in September, I don't think you would be allowed to join mid session. You have to register in advance.

Don't know about that. For Potugese there are two versions listed. For Spanish, I see there is only one. However, there are a lot of members from Spain, so you can complete the exercises and have one of them review your work and correct it.
