Default Flies

hi

just wondered if anyone else is having problems with flies at the moment. not the normal sort - these ones look like mosquittos but are not, as they don t bite! they are also very slow so you can manage to crush them easily!

about a month ago we noticed that in the under build to our house there was alot of these little critters and some how they are coming up to the bathroom in our house (which is above the underbuild). we have blocked all visible holes in the underbuild and the same in the bathroom (even keeping the plugs in) but to no avail.

just wondered if anyone else was having problems with these flies or if anyone had any ideas why we have them and how they are still managing to get into the bathroom?

They may be fruit flies, they are small like mossies and don't bite.

Have you checked that you have nothing growing or rotting in the area they are coming from, they are easy to kill with fly spray but you need to find the cause, they are usually only were they can find food, sorry I couldn't be more helpful

In Sweden I had a warm room with hot water tank that I used exclusively for home brewing, especially home made wine.
The fruit flies seemed attracted to it by the thousand and virtually ignored all the other sweet tasty scraps available throughout the rest of the house.

Fermentation chems draw them like a magnet.

Come on then, spill the beans about the body.
Just hope you haven't bumped off the old man and forgotten all about it.

Now, the decision seems to be which of the two would be easiest to get rid of.

If you are using compost to plant out at the moment, or are storing compost under the house, The flies could be coming from there. Fruit flies are quite tiny though. The ones that look like Mozzies but don't bite could be male mozzies, out and about early. But In England we used to have things that looked like mozzies which we always called mayflies. Could be those living in Spain too?

Get an ID book as the field is quite complex. I have seen something like mayflies here. There were three types we used to get by the pond in the UK, mayflies (arched body, vertical wings,) stoneflies (wings flat and horizontal) and alder flies which I can't remember. There were midges, which really bit like hell, and then some that used to fly in dizzy clouds. Flies are a pretty diverse group.
