Sorry Matt, hate to disillusion you old son, but it's something I studied long and hard, at school, and beyond. Science has always been a passion for me. I don't trawl Wiki for knowledge, because I don't have to. What I post, I know for myself, or I wouldn't post it. I'll use the odd reference for others to verify points, but the vast % of my knowledge is just that. Mine. What would be the point of pretending to be something I'm not? I leave that kind of trick to sad losers like, well, like you.

From what you post I can deduce that you know next to nothing about the subject, and your posts on it are the sort of twaddle I would expect to hear from a Jehova's Witness.

I look at what you post here, and your ignorance shines out like a pulsar in a paper bag

Having lost out in debate, and lacking in the basic knowledge you throw at me the 'insult' that by profession I am/was a chimney sweep.

You truly are a pathetic little non entity, aren't you? What do you think, I'm going to curl up and die? Moron. I'm a damn good sweep, and have left my mark on the profession to a degree that no-one else has.

I... I... I am honestly hurt, its not often I am lost for words but this time Bill I am, you have cut me to the quick and I honestly don't know where to go from here, in reference to a lighthearted comment you come back with a nasty reply full of insults and bitter words... I am shocked at you Bill and can't believe that someone with your intelligence has resorted to being so nasty and vicious.

Or am I?

Don't take it personaly.....she makes a habit of resorting to insults and name calling when she can't get her own way.

It's not just the volume in bars, they don't seem to have a volume control in general....never known people use their car horns so much either.

i beleive its not going to be the fittest that survive the need to use your brain will be first, not saying that i am clever far from it but you need to be able to think things through, so a bit of savvy as well as a bit of strength will go a long way and common sense as well will help, in short think act do it if its ok.

...and that's the problem with describing evolution as "survival of the fittest". It confuses most people!

Hi Matt - it's me again

Do you really think that the " hoodie wearing yobs that wander the streets staking out their "turf" and killing each other" are somehow the "fittest" in this context? Because I don't. I think that they are at the lower end of the evolutionary scale.

But I can understand that you might think that they are some kind of superior being

Are you going to follow me around on every thread? I only ask because if you do I will start a "I'm stalking Rugbymatt even though I'm having an amazing life in Spain" thread.

OK, this sums up the confusion nicely.

The expression 'Survival of the fittest' is used because it covers EVERY case.

It does not matter whether you are the cleverest, the fastest, the most efficient or the luckiest.

All that matters is what criterion is being used to select.

In times of plenty, the strongest may do well and breed more because they can grab more food.

If a predator moves in, then suddenly it's the fastest that will survive. If drought and famine, a smaller, slower animal that uses less food may be best, and today it might be down to luck. An asteroid hits on the other side of the planet and only those lucky enough to be on the far side survive.

That's why it's the fittest.

Also, remember this, without disaster there is little evolution. It's why transitional fossils are so rare.

To knock a species out of its niche, the incomer has to be twice as good. It isn't enough to be just a bit better.

The first amphibia weren't that good. The reason they did so well was that they faced no real competition. When the first reptiles evolved, they weren't that good either, but they had the supreme advantage that they could move into all the empty areas that the amphibia couldn't reach.

...and so it goes.
