Default First step to moving!

Firstly, HI
we're new to this site, just found it while trailing through endless pages looking for info and it looked the place to be part of!
We've made the decision to get out of blighty and head to Spain.
Can any of you give us any info to the employment situation for mechanics?
We're looking at learning the language but would need to kick off in an English speaking area until we found our feet.
I know it's a very general question but has anyone got any views as to the best area for us to start looking?
Many thanks Lisa

it is a very general question but usual pointers are

come with enough money to last approx 12 months at least, thats enough to cover rent/mortgage and all living expenses
ideally rent before you buy as areas can seem different once you live there for a while
if you have kids they will probably be better off in a spanish state school
work in all areas seems to be thin on the ground, the Spanish are struggling and many many English are going back to England because they have no work and have run out of money, once you are here you can make contacts and get yourself established but it wont be easy (not being negative just realistic)

good luck with your move

have a read through the posts on here and you will find a lot of insight into the pros and cons of livign in Spain

Many thanks for your feedback and taking the time to reply.
We don't have to worry about kids needing schools so that's a big concern knocked on the head.
The plan would be to rent for a while until we got a feel for a place.
Work is pretty patchy everywhere at the moment, I just wondered if there was a call for skilled mechanics.

On the note of renting.... is it mainly through agents or is there a big market for private rentals?
Thanks

The amount of rentals has probably doubled just lately as it is difficult to sell now, loads of signs up everywhere and a good time to bargain on the price.
Work is tight for everybody, even the Spanish, so that will be the biggest problem.

PLENTY of private rentals about, that wont be a problem at all

Really the problem is work - lots of people are returning as i said earlier - if you speak Spanish you may have more of a chance but to be honest now is not the best time to be coming over and looking for work

Work not so scarce on the ground in Barcelona and Madrid as other areas - but the cost of living is much higher, and I expect you don't want to consider moving to a city!! Most people don't when they dream of Spain...

around here apartments are approx 400-450 a month and townhouses around 600 although saying that once you find somewhere you might be able to haggle a bit

No idea if this is right, but we met a couple in Monforte de Lemos (Northern Spain) who said they were renting a 3 bed detached for 350 or 400 a month.
If so, probably much less work, and very few people speak English.

Yes that is about the correct price. Where we are you can rent a two bed apartment for about 200 euros a month.
