Panorama reported
Two persons injured, one very serious, following big explosion and fire in Gibraltar port this afternoon. Dense smoke could be seen from the city centre. The blast shook houses nearby.
The cruise ship 'Independence of the Seas' , due to have sailed at 4pm, was berthed nearby and quickly sailed away and anchored in the bay.
Explosion heard as far away as the South District. Hospital on stand-by. One of the injured persons, said to be Spanish, being transferred to a hospital in Seville.
not heard anything about the border - would be surprised if it was closed though

Hi all,
Its not affecting the border, tho it has affected the airport for aircraft flying in and out. Not sure what the situation will be tomorrow.

Pretty big event for Gibraltar. Two people injured sadly, one seriously.
Seems it was caused by someone welding on top of the oil tank.

Wow, amazing pictures.
I worked on Parsons Lodge Battery a few years ago, where is the live cam camera positioned?
Are the fumes going to cause an evacuation?
Is it just diesel oil thats burning or something else?

Hi Donny,
Nah the fumes werent toxic. It was some waste fuel, heavy oil diesel stuff.
Fire is out this morning and airport is open again as usual.
