Re: Ferries to UK from Spain
I liked the old Pride of Bilbao with its friendly Basque staff, and good hearty food at a good price, never mind these po-faced French and ponsified food at inflated prices (unless you use the outside cafe and sit in a gale on the deck).
Having said that, the Cap Finisterre is comfortable and well appointed. Just take your own food and drink unless you want to pay a fortune.

I am surprised that Ryanair and the Ferry company(ies) havent picked up on that money making wheeze
Going without any food or water for a 2.5hr flight shouldnt be a problem but a day or two on a ferry is a different matter.

Re: Ferries to UK from Spain
Having never considered travelling by ferry and then driving, can someone tell me the advantage(s) of it?
I can see that you may do it once when you first buy with a van but after that why not fly?
I am genuinely interested as I just don't get it.

Another is that some like to stop of along the way and visit various interesting places on route.
Another is that some people don't take well to air travel and can be affected by the change in air pressure.
All of the above have applied to myself at various times, though I'm sure there are numerous other reasons such as being master of your own destiny and having the flexibility to vary routes as you wish or the ability to travel from door to door at each end of the trip without expensive taxis, buses and other links which may or may not be reliable or fit in with the flight timetables.

Also, we could bring tons of cheap Spanish wine back to the UK and loads of cheap DIY stuff back to Spain!

I use Brittany ferries as its a very relaxed way to travel and allows you to take your car and as many goods as you can fit in without weight limits, if you live in southern Spain it also gives you a good chance to explore some of the north en route including the numerous vineyards, I`d always use the ferry if time allowed .
Brittany offer a good service with some excellent food in their restaurant ,meals not expensive either at £26 to £30 pp plus drinks , on board shops are reasonable ,cabins are clean , the main bar offers a cabaret in the evenings which can be a bit chavy but otherwise cant fault Brittany .

I understand better now.
I had only really considered my own circumstance, short breaks with the odd fortnight a couple of times a year, where flying is the obvious choice.
Cheers

I have some friends who regularly come to Sevilla for a fortnight via the Plymouth-Santander route. She has a health problem which means she can't fly. You could do the drive in 8 hours on the wonderfully empty and toll-free Ruta de Plata, but they just look on the journey as party of the holiday, doing stopovers at different locations, and take a bootload of wine back to the UK.

You might be visiting the UK for several months and want to take your car with you. This is the main reason we travelled by ferry. If we had only been going for a week or two we would have flown, although we don't like flying.

but it is a shame to miss out on the marvellous scenery that is Spain, so unlike the majority of the UK - flat, dull and boring, and covered with houses and too many eejuts on the roads.

Lost count of the number of trips I've made, but I must have enough booze stashed away in the UK to float the Queen Mary and all rapidly appreciating in value.
Great investment opportunity for anyone making frequent trips.

I reckon by now you must be seriously wondering why anyone flies at all !
