Crime happens everywhere, and you have to take precautions. In Spain we have grills on our windows and an alarm system with remote fob panic button. I only caught the beginning of the program, but if I had been at the barbeque and a masked man had appeared I would have pressed it and all hell would have been let loose.
Don't have sleepless nights just because of sensationalist TV programmes. Instead, get a good alarm system and just take the same care you would have in your old home in the UK

Have 5 big dogs including two Rottweilers, live in an area full of Gypsies, drive a beat up old van, and break more laws than the villains do and nobody will come calling.
If you require additional security dye your hair orange as well.

lucily i do have 5 dogs but have yet to do my hair orange..will put it on my to do list..lol
i only poosted it about the programme because i wanted a true opinion from the people who now rather than the scandal from the programme makers..
we are yet to come to spain..two house sales fallen through..waiting for another offer at the moment..
i was not worried by what we say at all..
i will however go on libe and look at the posts to the programme makers and see what has been sent to them..
it was a tonight programme..
it made me thin about the first lady when it was reported that in their large villa they had a specialist rrom built in their house to use in case of seige..it is called a panic room i think.. they also had a great burglar alrm but not the time to press it or use the panic room..
they onviously expected it to be of use..so it seemed to me they expected to be robbed..
the second people had taken their dog for a walk..had the reckas torn off pulled out of the wall by a tow rope tied round a vehicle.
there was a knifing of a young brit that was stabbed to death by a young spaniard..seemd lie a drunken argument..then a lot of talk of the spanish youth being brought up like this - a knife beeing the ultimate have to be seen with. or a must have..|
they showed marks ..that the E ROBBERS are supposed to be carving outside villa etc...but i have seen those marks before they are used by the house to house sales people and the gypsies who sell pegs etc or heather door to door
they have historically put signs to say if you have a dog or not also...whether it is worth knocking
so i have an open mind...and agree that the programme obviously sensationalised the problem..but perhaps you all now different..

Re: Expats under attack
When I was at home, even in the garden, I was always aware of what was going on around me. We never left our front door unlocked if not out there ... we lived out in the country.
As I said before you just have to be aware. The alarm panic button is on my trouser belt when I'm outside. I just have to hit it, and the exterior and interior alarms go off. It sends a call to a monitor and if we dont answer his return call then the Police are called. People live around us and would be alerted.
I have recently learned of burglaries that have happened on the other side of the mountain, and one of them was armed. However they seem to shy away from alarmed buildings as I dont know of an alarmed house that has been hit.

Me and my brother are thinking of starting a security patrolling firm in spain for those who would like that more sense of safety.
would this be a realistic business adventure over there?
Any opinion would be great full

I think the rules for such a venture here in Spain are rather more rigorous than the UK where they apparently employ illegal immigrants in such posts.

Question for Mitzyboy - so what system do you use & where did you buy it? bespoke or self made?

I dont particularly want to go into the detail, but I bought it from an alarm company which I believe covers most of the CB. Welcome to give you details if you want by pm / email
