Head above the parapet here,but I think I read somewhere recently that the authorities tax you somewhere in the region of 35% on Euromillion wins. Hope it is not true as I am due a win any day now.

Spain and Portugal both now tax you on significant Euro lottery wins.
Portugal is 20%.

Since January 1st any prizes on the Spanish lotteries of €2500 or over have 20% tax deducted.

Winnings on non Spanish lotteries have always been taxed at the normal income tax rates which can be as high as 52%. This also applies to UK premium bonds.

Is Euromillions classed as non Spanish?

Not that I'm seriously expecting to win but I have got a lucky dip ticket for tonight!

It is classed as a Spanish lottery as one of participants is the Spanish State Lottery - Loterías y Apuestas del Estado.

Thanks, so when I pop along tomorrow morning to collect my €94M or whatever it is, I won't mind giving them 20% (as if!).

So if a UK citizen tax resident in UK buys a ticket here in Spain whilst on holiday returns home finds it is the big one and claims the prize they will be sent a cheque from camelot with 20% tax deducted? Even though Camelot is a UK based company operating the euro millions lottery for all of Europe. Seems like an expensive holiday.

The cheque does not come from Camelot but from the local organisation that has joined with Camelot to offer a pan European lottery.
The claim I believe has to be made in the country where the ticket was bought as has happened in the UK with at least I mega winner.
Recently someone in the Algarve won 35million Euros, I doubt that they complained too much about only receiving 28million.

I saw a documentary some time ago that claimed that you dont actually get a cheque for the lot in one go, you get it over a period of time

If you win the Spanish lottery I think they just deduct the tax from the winnings directly irrespective of who bought the ticket. It's a tax on the lottery rather than on the individual.

As for Euromillions I can see that, as EMR says, they could do the same if the ticket was bought in Spain and paid out in Spain as it is essentially a Spanish lottery and the same rules would apply.

went to back to shop thinking we got three right only to be told we havent

The Euro millions are the same numbers but only the UK has the million£ raffle, this is one of the reasons why it costs the equivalent of E2.35.

All prizes large or small come from the country in which the ticket is bought.

A Spanish winning ticket prize must be claimed in Spain even for €10, it cannot be claimed in Portugal or elsewhere
