English TV channels
Just out for 10 days and I'm finding the evenings long with all this rain. I know most of use now use the internet to get British channels but I don't think the wifi is strong enough in my complex for that. Is it possible to get any English speaking channels via satellite anymore and if so who would you recommend ?
Thanks in advance

Re: English TV channels
Hi
There are still quite a few channels on sky / freesat channels ( sky news, CBS etc if you have a dish and satellite box but we use a Spanish TDT box ( 20Euros frm Carafour) to watch Spanish tv which airs many Uk/ USA programmes and films and you can change the audio to get them in English. Fortunately for us this does not include any Strictly, Soaps or dickheads in the Jungle rubbish.

Re: English TV channels
You can get all the UK HD channels on the Intelsat 907 satellite which uses an 80cm dish.
Costs about €300 fitted and no monthly charge.
You should find a local supplier fairly easily.

Will this work over in Portugal - Tavira. So only half an hour from the border?

Yes, it works fine. In fact, there is an installer locally.
Via Intelsat
Make sure you read the last section carefully as you need to understand that the continued availability of this system in not 100% guaranteed.

Neighbours of a friend in Albufeira bought this system cost over E400 euros.
Twice since installation the codes have been changed, once when the villa was rented, some very unhappy guests.
Plus of course the charge the " friendly installer charged for resetting the codes".
Mind you some of the alternative internet systems being sold are even less relaible.

You need to shop around. I have seen prices on the CDS between €180 and €280. It's €100 cheaper if you don't have Sky and realign your existing Astra dish.
The new codes usually appear on the Internet within a few hours of the change and, depending on the receiver, you can enter the codes manually in a couple of minutes.

Re: English TV channels
You can receive FREESAT in most of Spain. You can receive a lot of UK stuff with this for free.
You need to buy the relevant box in UK ( also available via Amazon) and enter a UK postcode when setting it up.
This runs on the ASTRA system.
Alternatively you can visit a local satellite shop (or look for one on Internet) and get a "FTA" system, "Free to Air" which will give you all the freely available channels from the ASTRA satellite cluster, but you MAY need to purchase a smartcard to get started.
80cm is a sensible size dish, even though smaller will work. 80cm will give you decent reception even in bad weather.

True, you can receive freesat in most of Spain, but the size of the dish required varies wildly.
But everything else is basically false.

Agreed - the poster clearly hasn't got a clue about the situation in southern Spain and southern Portugal.
It seems generally agreed that even a 3m dish will be inadequate to receive the Astra UK beam. In fact, for Astra UK beam, an 80cm dish would be useless anywhere in Spain.

Re: English TV channels
Actually Valencia area - 80cm dish works - but is beyond the limit of stable reception...no rain margin...no margin for wind wobble...but it is possible...I know as I have one and am watching bBC on it as I type!

Re: English TV channels
Will someone please advise how we obtain permission to mount an 80 cm Satelite Dish on our Duplex in Marina Esuri, we use Filmon TV mostly at present but it is not reliable so if this Intelsat 907 is the way forward I think it's worth the expense
