Default Electronic translator

Does anyone use one of these, and which is the best? They seem quite expensive, I need one that translates sentences not just words.

And yes, I have been learning the language but it doesn't quite stretch to negotiating buying a car yet!

If you have a tablet or smartphone why not just use google translate? You can download Spanish language and once that is done you no longer use the internet to use it. I know it is not perfect but I have used it to good affect even translated texts to both read and send, the Spanish painter got the gist of my messages and when he was at my house downloaded it himself to help him in his work .

I'd be interested to know how you use Google Translate offline - can you explain how to do a translation whilst having no internet connection please.

Yes no problem if you firstly download the translate App to phone or tablet. Once downloaded and you have a internet connection

Open up the app

In the top right corner 3 dots open that up

Open settings

Open Manage off line languages

On the right you should see installed languages (English should already be installed if not install as below for Spanish)

Below the installed languages is is a list of different languages so find Spanish or whatever language you want to download --- to the right opposite the language you want to download is a down arrow, click on that and let it download. Once that is done it should show in installed languages along with English.

That's it you can now disconnect from internet and translate between the downloaded languages as normal but without being connected to internet. A very useful and free option.

Thanks Bob, can you also do it Spanish to English - I had a look but can't seem to sort it? It would be useful if we want to know what the Spanish are saying for them to write or say it into my phone. The speaking bit is great fun, helps with pronunciation too!

I am looking at buying my first basic smart phone, sim free, to use apart from a phone, as a Sat Nav using NavFree and would now like to include this translation App. Is there a minimum spec needed for these to work effectively offline? I am currently looking at the New Moto G. Do not really want to spend more that 200€. Thanks for any advice.

The Moto g phone as Fred says is a very good phone. You can get some very good smart phones from eBay for far less money mind I use a 5" smartphone dual sim does everything I need and cost £48. Only real thing you need is decent amount of memory. I would say minimum 1gb ram and at least 8gb ROM or an SD card to download the languages to that you want to use of line.

Yes, it would be if it worked on my iPhone but it seems that you can only use it offline if it is the Android app.

Fred I only use android however a quick search for iPhone mentions downloading the latest translate from iTunes which does allow you to translate off line. The older one you are correct only works online for iPhone.

I have the latest version and offline is not an option. Can you point me to where it says it will do this?

Copy and paste this link Fred

If translate is no good I believe this one is a possible option for iPhone? Seems similar and can be used offline.
