e-bikes in Spain
Our plan is to buy a Finca, which will be 'out of town' and rather than jumping into the car for everything we have been looking at electric bikes over here in the UK as a good solution to short trips and keeping fit. Would we be better buying in Spain? Has anyone bought one and how easy was it. We hope to move to an inland part of Andalusia.
Thanks in advance. |
Re: e-bikes in Spain
I keep considering an electric bike, but the models I fancy are nearing the £2k range...
What I would say is the range of bikes that are available here is quite basic compared to the UK. Perhaps for my 50th! |

You'll get far better choice in the UK. I saw them locally in Spain and again they were anything up to 2k with a limited choice and it put me right off.

And Decathlon as well
https://www.decathlon.es/C-1146421-b...tas-electricas I think if I was buying I would look at the Gtech ebike as it does not have any gears. https://www.gtech.co.uk/ebike.html |
Re: e-bikes in Spain
Never having seen ( to my knowledge) an electric bike and knowing nothing about them I am thinking out of town, campo style road, possibly hilly.... enough power for when the legs give up ? and where to charge if needs when to get to town and are they built for "off road" type cycling ?

Re: e-bikes in Spain
if you can speak to dutch or german people they will tell you you get what you pay for. they dont just walk into a shop like decathlon, they have theres from factory where they made to measure for you.Hence a price tag from about 1400 onward

Mid drive motor, probably Bosch. Hydraulic disc brakes. Hybrid style, half way between a town bike and a full mountain bike, so we can tackle a ramblas or two as well as not be too hard work on the way back from the bread shop or bar. In the UK this sort of machine looks as though they are going to cost £1500 - £2000 each with a bit of discount if we buy 2 at the same time. We saw quite a lot of cyclists while over last month, so are there specialist bike shops or do people bring their own I wonder. |
Re: e-bikes in Spain
Bought the Raleigh STrada here for £1400. Brilliant. Up a steep hill you still puff and pant but it makes it easier.

Re: e-bikes in Spain
for the campo with comfort for road and off road you cant go farwrong with haibike .take a look at the sduro trekking 5 its a hybrid fantadtic bike.. you will need to pay apprx 2k for a good ebike haibike trekking has regular 20 gears if u want no power assist .. please forget the 1k bikes you see as you will buy twice..

Re: e-bikes in Spain
Thanks Grahamg65, just been looking at the Haibike electric range and am very impressed. Will have to find a local supplier so we get the sizing correct.

Re: e-bikes in Spain
If you're mainly road all a hybrid does is add weight and reduce speed. If you are only or nearly only road get a road bike. My Strada was reduced from £2,400 to £1,400. Look out for bargains!

Re: e-bikes in Spain
I'm all for a bargain frigilianafreddy, my Mum brought me up well. I expect we will mainly be on tracks and ramblas so believe the extra weight (typically 2 kg from what I can see) of a hybrid will be worth it.

Re: e-bikes in Spain
Mine is a Raleigh Array here in the UK - superb once they had sorted the problems out.
Be aware that there has been some confusion in Spain between Ebikes and Pedelecs. A pedelec is what we in the UK call a Ebike - max 250watts, 25kph and only work when you pedal. They are classed the same as ordinary bikes in Spain as they are in the UK. An Ebike (more powerful and works without pedaling) is classed the same as a moped. Pedelecs have been mistakenly classed as Ebikes and fines imposed. It is suggested that riders carry documentation specifying exactly what their bike is. |
Re: e-bikes in Spain
I bought an ebike 3-4 years ago, it purported to be Italian, Sol et Lune I think. It was considerably heavier than I was expecting, the only way to use it without the assist on was on the dead flat, or downhill!
The assist was quite good, three power - assist levels, and I could get 35-40 km from one charge. Then one day the battery just 'went'; I tried to get an official replacement battery and was told that there was a major problem with manufacture and/or distribution, couldn't get one, and still haven't found one. I was advised by one supplier to not go for a Chinese copy, as these were likely to burst into flames. The powertrain was Panasonic, so buy one of those at your risk. I'll keep looking for another battery, but will also consider upping the budget for a lighter bike, with a different powertrain. *edit* Just seen jimenato's post come in. Maybe my use of the term 'ebike' was wrong, mine only worked to assist you pedalling, it didn't go under it's own steam. |
