I just spoke to Brain Deller, author of Motoring in Spain.

It seems that the notice to renew the Spain licence is still out. (Although it comes via the Correos, so may not arrive! ).

And now, having done the medical the medical centre will send the application on to Traffico.

When I did my renewal about a year ago, it came back showing incorrectly that I was born in Spain. The replacement one never arrived as the postman did not like my address and had returned it as 'unknown'. I got it later when I questioned where it had got to.

Yes that has been my experience - it's a great system but it relies on Trafico sending it and Correos delivering - a combination made in Hell!

Even if it gets back to Trafico the odds are it won't get processed properly. I have to renew every 3 years for health reasons. The last time I duly sent off the renewal application etc and paid for a three year licence - what did I get - a five year licence!

One point I would add, if you make a renewal without the reminder form you can download the application form but you also need a "talon foto". This is a small piece of paper onto which you stick the photo and also sign in a box underneath - they scan this to put on the licence. You cannot send the photos separately.

This "talon" cannot be downloaded (or I have not yet found a way). You can get one from Trafico offices or possibly at the health centre. If you send in the form without it they will send you one (Correos permitting) but this will waste about 3 weeks in the process.

May not be new to you but since the last and first time I applied for a driving licence was in Cyprus in 1959 when we didn't have computers or a DVLA for that matter and the driving test was to drive a hungover corporal to the Chai Muckers tent where he gave me a Pink Slip to send off to the UK.

It was to me!!

I thought it was a bit of an aggressive comment as well! Particularly as my wife will be very interested to read about your experience. She has been dallying about getting her photo id DL partly because she is a dallyer when it comes to things like that and partly because she is fretting that her current licence has her maiden name on it. But she does one of the new style chip passports so should be OK if she would just get on with it.
