Default driving Bilbao to Costa Blanca South

Have relatives driving down from Bilbao to playa Flamenca end of July. Any ideas of best way, have tried two internet searches and one suggests via Madrid, and the other via Valencia. Anyone driven it, best way? places to avoid etc? many thanks

I am actually doing this drive in June and was told by a neighbour to avoid Madrid especially if you are in a UK car, so am also interested in the best route

Hi folks.

We came over a week ago and would most certainly suggest the Valencia route. Have just had a visitor from the UK who is spending 6 weeks on a motorbike going around Spain/Porugal and he said going round Madrid was horrendous.

Bilbao to Zaragoza is toll road and the leg onwards to Valencia is Motorway. both roads are brand new and the views are spectacular. It is very mountainous but because you are on motorways the climbs are very easy. There are lots of viaducts crossing valleys and you can see the old road twisting & turning up the valley sides below you.

Plenty of Services and rest points on the Bilbao to Zaragoza section but not much on the bit to Valencia - so beware. You can still pull off at a junction and find a parking spot on one of the country roads - that's what we did.

From Valencia onwards you are on the AP7/A7 Autopisto Mediterranio all the way.

This is by far the easist way - may not be the shortest, but for someone not used to Spanish roads it has got to be the best.

Good luck.

Tony

madrids fine, done it a couple of times, but reading what tony has said re the new section from zaragoza, it may well be the answer, as it was a bugger when we did it 4 years ago, when it was a single laner.

I took the SatNav route which took me via Madrid. Absolutely fine in a UK van... couple of roundabouts, traffic was fine (mid afternoon).

Probably much harder if you don't have digital Dorothy along to direct you safely around the outskirts.

Having read some of the posts here, and have looked at the two routes via our sat nav, we will go for the Valencia route, after all time for us is not important but the scenery looks to be more interesting.

Will let you know how we get on

And make sure you take plenty of photos and add them to the photogallery up in the above menus!
