Default Dogs Spain to UK

I have no idea what it will cost me or what the immunisation and paperwork requirements are in order to take a dog back to the UK. Has anyone looked into this and have a vague idea on either please?

Here is a link to the DEFRA web site.

Was there not a thread about this recently on here?

Yes there was!

Here's the link to the thread, Danemad

Go to reply number 4 by Mercedes - that will start you off.

I always found DEFRA really helpful if you phone them to clarify information too
(You can get a bit "tied up in knots" on the website with what you do and don't have to do, and within what time frame!)

Have you spoken to your Vet here? He/she should be able to advise you.
Obviously, because the UK is currently rabies free, there are more hoops to jump through when you want to enter or re-enter the UK with an animal.

That's why our dog is now Spanish, and won't be returning!

Good luck,
Sam.

Hi

To take a dog or cat back to the uk, first they need to have the yearly vaccine up to date. You will then need a rabies vaccine (approx 20 euros), a month after the rabies vaccine they will need a blood test (not sure how much for 1, I had 3 cats & 1 dog done, & that was 100 euros for all 4). The blood test is then sent off by courier to surrey in the uk for testing (approx 45 euros for post), you then need to transfer £34.70 per pet, to the labs bank account in uk for the process of the bloods. The labs then fax the results to your vets, and if all ok, the dog/cat can travel after 6 months. And of course a passport is needed about 6 euros, and a microchip 30euros.

Once you are ready to travel, I think you need to get a certificate 48 hours before from your vets to say that the pet is fit and well.

Hope this helps.

Great help, thank you all!

I don´t suppose anyone is interested in adopting one of the dogs I have rescued since I have been here?

What sort of dog, as I've adopted a German Shepherd, she was 7 months old when I had her and now she's 3.5. She is probably now socially acceptable of other dogs which she wasn't for a while and had to work on building her confidence. But often thinks she may need a playmate, but one I can still take them both to restaurants and out with me. She goes everywhere with me when I'm here.

Hi Mercedes. All my 3 dogs are mutts, albeit gorgeous and adorable. Two would have to be rehomed together cos they´re brothers so they are no good for you but Winnie (Winston) is an adorable chap and I really, really don´t want to let him go...

He is a sort of boxer, staffie looking boy and is the gentlest thing. Here you go (photo). He´s about 6 months old.
