Do you pay for waste collection in Spain ?

Just read the paper and in England there going to introduce a new charge of 56p a kilo for collecting domestic rubbish !! Another money grabbing scam you can bet the rates wont go down , as its already supposedly covered in them .

However this got me to thinking as the rates in Spain are so damn cheap do they operate that system over there on the mainland or the islands ?

If they dont do they collect weekly as long as you bag it and put it at the end of the drive as in England ?

And do they charge ?

We bag up our rubbish and it is collected every night at 23.00 on the dot from outside the front door.
Last years charge for this was €65, on top of the council tax/rates.

Another week!! You should be so lucky....they collect fortnightly round our way, alternating with black bins (household waste) and green bins (recyclables) so miss them and you have two weeks worth .....as we have because we were on holiday and missed the collection

Where I live we have large wheelie bins along the road, different colours for different waste, things like glass, cardboard and plastics are usually picked up weekly but household and garden waste is picked up every night about 2am for this we pay 26euros every two months. We don't have to walk more than 100 yards to a bin, we are however expected to bag our rubbish and any large items will be taken if we notify the waste office, but in practice our bin men are brilliant and will take anything as long as it is place neatly by the bins and not left all over the place.

Ours is in wheelie bins always picked up at least once a day, sometimes twice.
When I lived closer to the tourist center it was picked up at 03.00 also every morning, and cos they were awake everyone else had to be awake. ;-(

We dont pay anything, collection usually on a Tuesday night, glad it is way down at bottom of lane, gets pretty rank in high summer.

We didn't pay anything until July last year, then Chiclana council got their act together.

Likewise, here we have it collected every night without fail. I can't imagine having waste here left for a week before collection, especially in the summer. In fact, during summer months you are not allowed to put your waste out before 10.00pm.

I am the same as solarwizz, don't pay a penny bean.

But then what can you expect when my rates are only 4.50 €uros per year

We have large wheelie bins throughout our village, and they are emptied 6 days a week at 10.30am.
We don't have to walk very far to our nearest bins - about 50m in either direction.
They do tend to get a bit full over a weekend or Fiesta time in summer, when our village population "swells" to 400; with people arriving to stay in their holiday homes.
We've been here a year now, and haven't had a bill for rubbish collection yet!!

We didn't get a bill until we went to the water company and registered for Basura. We now pay 26€ every 2 months.

Hi Big Pete,

Rubbish tax is called Basura: (Rubbish Collection Tax) Annual tax payable by ALL property owners (even if the rubbish bins are miles away from your property!).

The amount payable depends on the size of your registered property. If for some reason someone has never paid it, when they go to sell (or re-finance, mortgage, etc) the Suma office flags it and you pay with a hefty fine on top. For any of you who are not paying it, don't let it go for too long. I would strongly advise going to your local town hall or water company, or Suma office and find out what's happening.

And since we're on the subject of taxes, there is also the IBI tax for property which is very similar to council tax.....

IBI is the Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles, which could be translated as "property tax". This is a municipally levied tax and varies widely from one municipality to another and from one type of property to another. You might for instance, pay as little as 50 euros per year for a simple property in a rural area. While a luxury home on a prime lot in an expensive urban neighbourhood might cost as much as €1,500 to €2,000 year.
