Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can help or advise me regarding obtaining a death certificate. My father died in Spain (he was living in Spain at the time) in 2020. I did not receive any official paperwork etc at that time. Recently I was guided to a government website where you can request a death certificate, however after completing the online application I received a reply asking me to register my ID (passport) on the relevant government site and then reapply for the death certificate. I have tried to do this, but there was no link or website info provided. I have found the 'clove' system but having tried both online and with their app, I can't seem to do this as it will not accept my UK passport number. I'm a bit lost as to how to proceed. I would be very grateful if anyone can offer some guidance about how to move forward with things.

Thanks for the reply. I had very limited contact with my father over the last years of his life, so I knew very little of his illness, subsequent death and any of the dealings immediately afterward. It was also during the Covid period, so as you can imagine it was very difficult to know what was going on. I do not have any info as to regard the undertaker involved.

It is so difficult when events such as Covidbthrow a spanner in the works. I am hoping that members in the know will be able to help with your question.

In the mean time, his town hall, doctor, neighbours yes may be able to give you additional information.

You can't do it with a passport; you will need to get an NIE. (foreigner's identification number) for that you will have to apply at the nearest Spanish consulate to where you live.
Or talk to a gestor or solicitor who could do this if you give them POA. (trouble with that is you need to do this face to face) or you did..

Who dealt with his estate when he was living here and his tax returns??

I think the person dealing with your application made a mistake - Clave doesn't work with passport numbers and it's a public document so you shouldn't have to have a Clave to get one, it just speeds the process up.

The London, Manchester, and Edinburgh consulates in the UK deal with death certificates too. In theory you can apply in person there or to them by post.

So you could try replying to the person who got into contact with you saying you're a non-resident and only have a passport number so you can't use Clave and could it be done without it. Alternatively you could contact one of the three consulates by phone or on their civil registry e-mail address and see if they can help with your current application (or maybe it would be easier to start a new application with them).

It's a good idea to apply for a certificado plurilingüe which includes English to avoid translation costs later.

Hopefully one way or another your application can be sorted out quickly.
