A couple of years ago we applied for the new Residency Certificates and had to go to the Police Station in Torre del Mar. We were able to download the forms from the internet, which saved some time.
If we want to de-register our NIE numbers, is there a form to be filled in which we can find online, or do we just go to the police station and queue up to find out?

According to the British Consulate Website when you leave Spain and return to the UK you should de-register your NIE number, from the Padron and from the health centre you are registered with.
Lots of queuing up!! If there is a form to download this will save time.

Maybe they mean taking yourself off the resident's list?

From the Consulate Website, I downloaded a pdf document with lots of information about returning to the UK and it stated "de-registering your NIE number" their words not mine. But I suppose it really means letting them know that you are no longer resident in Spain.

De-registering with the Spanish authorities
Tell the Town Hall and the Police you are leaving; and if you have registered for healthcare, the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS) also need to know. If you don’t de-register before you leave Spain, you may face difficulties in registering in the UK and getting benefits.

My husband and I are retired we sold our property and left Spain a year ago. We did not deregister because we did not know that we had to, we have had no problems with the NHS here, so is it compulsory to deregister? Brenda

I had a look at the site and they say this:-
• Deregistering your Foreigner's Identification Number (NIE). You can do this at your local Police Station
Personally I think the Embassy advice is incorrect. An NIE number is issued for life(and beyond!) and has absolutely nothing to do with residency status.
Hundreds of thousands of UK residents have an NIE number as they have, or had, property or financial interests in Spain.
If you inherit assets in Spain you need an NIE number even if you have never set foot in Spain!
I would suggest that when they say "deregister" your NIE they are referring to your Residencia card or the new registration certificate.
It would not be the first time that information published by the embassy was incorrect!

I thought this also, it is our residency certificate and our registration at the local town hall that we have to deregister.
I only ask if this is really neccessary because if it is, it means we have to go back to Spain just to do this, and it also means being at the police station at 7.00 and queue for a ticket!!
I have read a few forums and they seem to indicate that you have to deregister in order to register again in the UK on the NHS, well we have not had a problem with this.
Does anyone know what would happen if we did not deregister?

As far as I know you do have to declare that you are no longer resident here if you leave permanently and I think shaggymon is right that it is the same form.

You need to go to the policia nacional and change from resident to non-resident and therafter to the tax office and do the same. In the taxoffice you will have to fill out a form 030 to change your status ( At least I think it´s this model) and at the police station they will tell you what to do. take your passport and other NIE documents.

Thank you for your replies.
If it is any help to anyone else, we did go to the Police Station in Marbella to de register when we went back to Spain for a week, but we did not have the originals of our residencia certificates only copies, the originals were in the UK, but we were given the forms to complete and the number on the bottom is EX 16 and we have to take Original Residencia, passport and copy and be there at 8.30 for a ticket. She wrote all that down for us...was just hoping that it was not essential to do all this! We are going back next month for a week, so will do it then. Brenda
