When we first came here we used to buy wine which cost around €3 a bottle as normal, sometimes up to €5. They were all good, rarely had a bad bottle.

A few months ago we were recommended Fin Del Rio which we get from Mercadona at €1.99 for a ltr bottle. It is excellent for day to day drinking, and now most of the neighbours around here drink it as well. We have the odd bottle of more expensive wine as a treat, but why pay more if you find a wine you enjoy!
At Mucky Donna Mitzyboy try the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2004 ESTOLA its very cheap I bought some a few years ago and forgotten about it, I found it the other week that was year 2000 and it drank very well. Ideal for Roast Beef Sunday Lunch. The price is about €3 try one bottle then stock up if you like it. Any rough Red wine you buy why not mix it with Gasseosa as the rice farmers do here. I prefer white wine myself but admit I am rather fond of the ESTOLA. Now lets discuss its taste ,Straight away the presence of Prune and plum dominates the nose. Smells thick and chewy, However the body is not thick and chewy, given the nose. Some tannin appears on the finish.But is not too dry. Has a good length for a wine costing tres Euro. Try it :blink::blink:

Personally I adore NZ wines but they are almost impossible to find in Spain - it's the main reason I go to Gib once a year!

If you consider South Africa "New World" then Lidl have a really good Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon for 2.29 - definitely worth a try.

Just a glass or three mate :o:o:o None of that NZ muck though Mate Its made in steel vats, The wine makers are more like chemists mate and thats a fact.At least our vats in Aus are made from stainless steel .:zzz:

Extremely overpriced for what you get. It's a nice wine, but an equally good wine can be bought for half the price. These people spend huge amounts of money on their name and brand. Who do you think pays for that?

For this evenings meal I've bought a bottle of local stuff with nothing more than the bare minimum legal requirement of information on the label. €1.39 and I'll bet it's as good as anything €5 buys in the supermarket.

The biggest cost with wine (other than tax in some countries) is distribution. Always buy local and you'll always get the best value.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the observation about risk. I mentioned Protos first in the thread, and still rate it but am open to the possibility that there are as good wines cheaper.... given that I also rate the Carrefour Dominio del Fuente, which I do NOT claim is as good!
But you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince, so to speak!! So at the top end, it's Protos for me - occasionally - until I find an equivalent I like.
Anyway, just to take up on someone else's comment about inverted snobbery, I don't think (without ploughing the thread from the beginning again) that anyone's said expensive wines are pointless and that you can get a brilliant wine for 2€. What I and many others have said is that you should not assume you have to pay a lot to get a reasonably decent wine for home consumption, and it is total madness to discount cheap(er) wines just on the basis of their very cheapness.
nb it's quite amusing really re branding - that, including wine labelling for one of the big names, is what my OH's company did!

I think this is a very good thread.
If it can be kept going, as when we find a wine that we like. Two years down the line, it doesn't taste the same.

Or is it me?

Hey jimmbo....do you know there is a vineyard in Hambledon :) Also you can buy a bottle of local wine in Asda (can't remember if that is from the Hambledon vineyard though) the peach wine is lovely, bit on the sweet side but very nice :)

I,ve tried some of the IOW wines, but too tart (sorry dry) for me.

Off topic. I miss the HSB beer from Horndean. It ain't the same now it's brewed in Chiswick.

Cheapest wine here in Ireland is usually around 7-8 euro. Only thing i miss from England is the cheaper wider variety.

We were given tickets a few years ago to Vinopolis attraction in London ... www.vinopolis.co.uk We came to the conclusion that we often preferred the cheaper wines, especially when it came to white wines, as we like our wine dry and unoaked. There was no 'snobbery' (inverse or otherwise) about this decision. We merely had the opportunity to try many wines one after the other (palate refreshed in-between each with a piece of dry biscuit) and decide which we liked best. We also got to try some wines we would never have considered buying in the first place!

Hi noelrosie I have been to Vinopolis many times (my Mother lived about 200 yards from their front door) and I agree about tasting wines you would not think of buying. We tasted a really nice Hungarian white, it was about £2.99 in price and by far much nicer than some of the more expensive we had tasted that day. We tasted 24 wines that day, mainly produce from New Zealand, Australia and AArgentina a great way of finding new wines, we had found our liking for New Zealand wines when we had the chance to spend a month in New Zealand when my daughter lived there.

Obviously have similar tastes then;)
We generally prefer New World wines, with the exception of some which come out of California :thumbdown:
Understand that 'Torres' offer tasting sessions at their vineyards in Spain ... but haven't ever been to one!
