Cost of moving to Spain

What is the best way to move your belongings to Spain? Is it expensive?

missile Aug 26th 2018 4:57 am

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

That really depends on how much belongings you want to move from where to where?
Best is not always cheapest.
Some DIY, others use a man and a van, we used a professional removal company.

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

It’s no different to moving within the UK, just a bit more expensive due to the distance involved.

Ours came by ship in a container, not cheap but cheaper than purchasing new and we are almost 1000 miles south west of Europe.

Thanks for the info, I don’t think we will have too much to move, we will be looking to buy a property that is fully furnished so I think a large van will probably suffice.

Only downside of renting before you buy, is the market is on the up in Spain, so in a year the houses you were looking at now could be costing a lot more.

I suggest you consider very carefully what is really necessary to bring - it is a good opportunity to have a real sort out. I never regretted arriving with very little and acquiring what I really needed here. And as many new houses and even rentals are available ready furnished you might be surprised at how little you need to bring. This will also, of course, save you money.

Good advice! ....It will cost you around 20% of the purchase price to sell & buy again if you get it wrong.

We rented for a few months in a number of different areas and different towns/villages before finally buying our property. It took us a couple of years before we found our "Goldilocks" village and we rented there for 6 months before buying. It is a lot easier buying property while you're living in the area and you get a better idea of what's a realistic price and where the bargains are.....not all property is advertised on English websites.

Good luck with your new adventure

Thank you for your advice guys, we are coming over early next year for a week or two and will be traveling around to get an idea of where we may like to live, we had planned on renting for a while before buying, the only thing is as you mentioned prices are increasing so we don’t want to wait too long.

I don’t know how it will affect people who want to work but it could affect our pensions, that’s the worry at the moment for us

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

How would removal costs affect your pension? Are removal rate charges different depending on if you are buying or renting? or if you have a job?

Mcgreevy1 Aug 28th 2018 1:45 am

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

We were talking brexit not removal cost

Fred James Aug 28th 2018 4:42 am

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

Why would you think that Brexit would affect your pension?

I’m not sure yet but the news has said that if we leave the EU it could be difficult to access our pensions as they will only be paid into British bank accounts

I suppose you could be correct if you listen to all the BREXIT scaremongering. They have to print something in the newspapers to be able to sell them. Just look on the bright side, we may all get deported back to the UK, hand your house keys in at the nearest Spanish town hall, no problem with bank account and pension payments then.

Fred James Aug 28th 2018 8:29 pm

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

A lot of people have thire pensions paid into UK banks anyway. They just transfer the money as needed.

I can't see any problems with that.

bobd22 Aug 28th 2018 9:27 pm

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

Even with the recent pension payment scaremongering if there is no ⠀‹deal that is in relation to annuity type pensions not state or ordinary works type pensions from what I have seen. As Fred says what is the difficulty in having any pension paid into your UK bank then transferring with whichever company you choose to your Spanish account?

Johncarzx Aug 28th 2018 9:48 pm

Re: Cost of moving to Spain

Bob & Fred are both correct as usual but what confuses me is why two old timers that get spooked by all the BREXIT (the world is coming to an end) rubbish are considering leaving the UK.

Many of us have our pensions paid into UK account.
Get your pensions paid into Santander 123 account, receive interest on the balance and draw cash as euros with zero commission to change & a good exchange rate at any Santander ATM.
