Default Cost of Living in the Canaries

Hi,

As a single middle aged man, no kids, no smoke,no drugs, no gamble, but like to drink, socialise, eat out. Will be renting a two bed fully furnished apartment/villa. How much do you think it would cost per month.

What sort of life would you have on $2000.00 Euro's a month?

The Canaries, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote etc?

I am looking at £1800.00 a month Sterling so around $2000.00 Euro's.

Cheers Sign.

I have a few questions.

I want to live in the Canaries, warm all year round, but i know the cost of living is not cheap. I spent a month in Puerto De Carmen last year, had a look round.

Are there any good sites to look for fully furnished accomodation in the Canaries?

As a single in his 40's gent, likes a beer or six, near the sea, nightlife, anyone got any good suggestions? Obviously the cost of living needs to be reasonable, well within what i call, a normal budget?

Current monthly budget = $2121.00 EURO 1 GBP = 1.17834 EUR

Thanks.

With 2000 euros per month you can live like a king. you'll be well into middle class stuff.

Drive big car/4x4 - no problem.
Decent restuarants - no problem.
several holidays each year, etc.

Rent - 3 bed, 2 bath, garage, 400 euros per month.

It's more expensive than Spain, but so long as you stay clear of the tourist areas, you'll be ok.

You cant get a nice 3 bed house for 400pm on the costas mainland for 400 pm yet its more expensive in the Canaries

Decent restaurants are from 50 euro per head with wine on the mainland , several holidays each year where to the local b&b, you wont run a big car either on that money unless you leave parked up

Its no wonder so many go back skint

In that case I'd better move to the Canaries, it seems it's way less expensive than the Spanish mainland.

The Canaries has a lower level of tax on most things due to it's so-called disadvantaged location.
A bit of a laugh really because the Canaries have a massive climate advantage over the mainland making it a far better Winter destination.
Quite a number of other advantages also IMO,the only drawback being more limited travel options, either flights or a very expensive ferry.
I always found quite a diffence in prices throughout the islands, Tenerife being the cheapest by quite a bit, compared with the more German/Scandi biased islands to the East.
In addition the Westerly isles are far more beautiful and enjoy a much better climate compared with God-forsaken, sand blasted,desert-like places such as Fuerteventura.

Hello there.

I live in Lanzarote - so will help if I can.

The islands all have different costs of living. For example, Tenerife and Gran Canaria are cheaper to live on (by average) than Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. This is because they have a more established infrastructure. Many goods containers got to GC or Tenerife before reaching here in lanzarote... so that can entail extra costs.

Also - different people spend different amounts. I'm quite frugal, so don't eat out as often as some - but business interests keep me speaking with business owners (including bar and restaurant owners) on a daily basis... so can help a little.

I can only speak for Lanzarote with any personal experience... but looking at €2000? For a single man who doesn't the overheads that so many others of us "enjoy" - then yes the above poster is absolutely right... you would live very well. I don't think it would stretch to several holidays per year... but you could certainly afford a nice house, nice car, and eat out regularly enough.

Of course, as has been said... the resorts are more expensive to live in than the villages... but if socialising is your thing, then stick to the resorts whilst you find your feet.

I live in Playa Blanca, which is the most southerly resort on the island. Great for eating out... and certainly for socialising. Puerto del Carmen is busier and geared much more to the British and Irish crowd. Costa Teguise is just starting to embrace its new status as a spillover residential area for the capital, so great to see Spanish businesses doing well... but most Brits are struggling big time.

2 bed place in Playa Blanca with its own pool is around €600 per month. More about villas than apartments down here... but bargains can be found. Puerto el Carmen and Costa Teguise are slightly cheaper. And yes, the villages are cheaper still... although you'll not have so many choices of places to rent.

The IGIC (tax) here is very low... but is often cancelled out by the increased costs of shipping anyway.

Meal in a half decent restaurant is around €20 for 2 courses and wine - per head. Menu del Dia is anything from €5 out in the villages, to €15 in the resorts. Bottle of decent wine from a supermarket is around €€, although I've found one that I really like for just over a euro.

The landscape in Lanzarote is stark - which many of us find beautiful. This is down to its climate (dry and sunny) and its volcanic origin. But in late January / early February each year, the hills and meadoiws are green, and there are fields of flowers as we would have just had our rains. My husband started walking from the northern tip yesterday morning... and will finish at the southernmost tip later today. All 73km for charity, bless him! He normally only sees the island in his car, so has been very pleasantly surprised by how much foliage is about. Should have listened to me before

You might spot a link to a website in my signature. I help people with advice, as they move to Lanzarote, as a hobby... I am not an Estate Agent, and have absolutely no vested interest in providing any help etc. I can't offer the same advice for the other islands with specifics... but can help a little "generally". All advice given free of charge and with a warm heart.

Good luck - and enjoy your new life in the sunshine if that's what you choose to do.

Hi, we're a married couple and intend to move to GC in August/September, we do have friends there, but still like to know if we can live on an average income of between 2700 and 3000 Euro. This as one of us is able to keep the UK job. We have already found a house we might be able to rent. That is 650 Euro/month. Like to know what cost average utitlities, broadband,tv and petrol is.
As we have to live of 1 income in the beginning, we thought it might be good to have at least a financial safetynet. We have been on GC many times, but a holiday is different cost wise then living there
So if anyone can give us an idea, that would be very much appreciate

Cheers

Live like a brit and pay through the nose, live like a local and pay a lot less would seem to sum up living abroad for me in many respects

I'm in Gran Canaria shortly for a couple of weeks. I've been a few times over the years and love the island and now I've retired I'd like to rent a small villa or good apartment for six to eight weeks at a time, two or three times a year. I prefer the south of the island, PDI / Maspalomas for a holiday but don't mind living further out so long as there are bus links into town (and I will taxi home); dodgy right knee is stopping me driving at present. Reliable internet is needed of at least 2Mb or higher.

If anyone has any links feel free to PM me.

cheer thanks for the response but we already read this response from the lade in Lanzerote. We like have some specifics about Gran Canaria, South of island, Maspalomas. If anyone has some very current info in regard to cost of phone, mobile, internet, how to get english tv that would be great.
We already have a house we probably can rent, north of Maspalomas in the Spanish residential area wich will be 650 Euro monthly. Also how far do our monthly 2700 - 3000 Euro will go, it is for the 2 of us.
Cheers
