Default Cost of a gardener

I am posting for a friend who is not a member. She is looking for a gardener to cut her grass and do general garden work such as cutting the grass, weeding. She is in the Cadiz area and wanted to know what she should be paying by the hour for this type of work. She has already spoken to a couple of people but the prices they gave were ridiculously high.

No more than €10/hr. There are plenty of people who will work for less.

Important to establish what work is needed and how long it will take. Many "pay by the hour" workers can turn two hour work onto four, thereby doubling their total income!
IMO better to state what work is needed and agree a price for it. No room then for any confusion.

That is so true.

I was going to mention "with or without IVA" but that would be stating the bleedin' obvious.

Takes me back talking about gardening. Some years ago I was looking after a friend’s villa while he was back in the UK. He asked me to find him a gardener. A Spanish friend of mine told me she knew a good British gardener. She had just recommended him to an elderly couple and they were pleased with the low price and the result. So I phoned him and arranged to meet at the villa. He looked over the garden and told me the price would be 60 euros a day. I asked him how many days it would take. He told me 3 days. Then he told me it was summer. I said, so? He told me it was hot and the summer price was 100 per day. I told him it was a lot but I would phone my friend and tell him and it would be his decision. Then he told me he would need help. I said, so? So he had to bring a friend and he would want 100 a day. I said it would cost 600 euros to do the gardening. He said, yes. I told him I would phone my friend but he would say no. The gardener just shrugged.

So I was recommended to another gardener. A nice Spanish pensioner who did gardening for the town hall. I arranged to meet at the villa and we talked. He told me the job would take 4 days and the price was 60 per day. I said to him, 4 days, 60 per day. He nodded. I phoned my friend and he said, okay. I told the gardener to do the job and said phone me when it was finished and I would go back there and pay him. At the time I was living about 40 kms. away, but something made me go back to the villa on the second day. I found a British gardener watering the garden. I said, who are you? He said, who are you? I said I’m the one paying for the job. Where is the Spaniard who is supposed to be doing the gardening? He told me he worked for the Spaniard. I looked around the garden. No way would it be finished in 4 days. I asked him why he was watering the garden. He told me it was too hot to work. He worked 4 hours in the morning because it was too hot to work after that. I said, so I’m paying you to water the garden. He looked at me. I asked him how long the garden would take? He said about 8 days. I told him your ‘boss’ told me 4 days. Ah, he said, that is with both of us doing the work. On my own it will take 8 days. At 60 a day, I said? He nodded. I told him to stop everything. Just leave everything where it was and I wanted to see the Spanish gardener at the villa the next morning. That afternoon, while talking to a neighbour, they told me that they drove past the previous the afternoon at siesta time and saw the gardener fast asleep in his car. The next day we met. The Spanish gardener with his wife looking daggers at me from the van. I told the British gardener that his ‘boss’ said 4 days and now it is 8. The British gardener looked at his friend and said he never told me that. The upshot was I told them I would pay them for the 2 days and to leave the property.
In the end I bought a pair of clippers and trimmers and tidied it up myself in an afternoon.
Just a tip, but get a written quote from the gardener. You can tear it up afterwards, but they can start on the garden and then up the price.

Hiring staff is always hit or miss. Some do a good job for a fair price many don't

yeah, bleedin' obvious - no IVA
the only one's who would charge IVA are the gardeners who own their own garden centre and do such work

Hola

About the right sort of price in the Cádiz - many are on 8 euros an hour - they come every week and do an hour´s work
