Christmas is Coming

I glanced into a British bookshop in our local Centro Comercial this morning and spied a Christmas card which said

"To the Cat, from all of us"

Have people completely and utterly lost the plot? What's the most useless and ridiculous piece of Christmas tat you've seen on sale?

Clinton Cards have been selling these for years. It is wonderful that the Spanish shops do not go in for cards in this way.

They don't really do cards at all here. They think the Brits are mad, posting cards to people they are going to see next day!

It is however obligatory to have ten or more poinsettia plants on your windowsill and eat your own weight in sugar over the 12 day period ...

As for tat, I saw some furry penguins to hang on Christmas trees the other day. Has Santa Claus opened a branch in the Antarctic?

Ooh yes please. But "Due to the nature of this product you cannot ‘Add to Basket’ & checkout from this page". Can't imagine why! :D

Re: Christmas is Coming

I read somewhere recently that the British send more cards than any other country even the US.
I always assumed the spanish didn't go for it much because families see each other so often. It's nice to get a card from someone far away but a bit pointless if they are there to wish you Happy whatever. I tend to stick to birthdays and Christmas but you can't blame the card shops for pushing lots of other 'events'.

When we first came to Spain I was delighted that the Christmas tat didn't start appearing in shops near us until the end of November (instead of August back in the UK). It does seem to be creeping forward here though. This year the lights are up already and the turron isles appeared in the supermarkets two weeks ago. :(

Where I used to live in Spain Christmas food dtarted appearing the beginning ot Dec Christmans toys/gifts etc not till after 26th Dec for Los Reyes.

In my new town they are already bringing out Christmas food etc I thought this early due to the financial strain on families and needing to start early to help spread the cost. I have no idea about the amount spent on childrens toys etc here ... no children here and mine are all adults now.

They are right!!

We send the odd birthday card using greeting card universe which is cheaper and more reliable than buying and sending a card from Spain but we don't do Christmas cards. My excuse is that it's ecologically damaging. Which it is.

Things are going to be tighter than ever now they have abolished the extra month's pay people used to get in December. Also there is more and more pressure to get kids presents from Santa as well as los Reyes. Glad I'm not a parent!

They've been selling Mince pies here in the UK since September. For once I'm not complaining about season creep - I love them!

Plenty of shops here in the UK have cards 'from the cat', 'from the dog' saw some a couple of days ago when we were looking for cards, you also now have, to and from Great Grandparents..

Re: Christmas is Coming

I love sending Christmas cards to my friends and relatives in the UK and have always made them using my old Microsoft Greetings software. Unfortunately when my computer tower was taken away for repair I left the disc in the DVD drive. When it came back it was missing. I have looked on Amazon for a replacement but this disc is no longer available. There are several alternatives - such as Hallmark - but the reviews are not that good. Does anyone use a card making software programme? Which one, and is it any good?
