Chiclana - News

There have been three or four fires in Chiclana this week including one at Campano Silicianos (not sure of spelling, so excuse me if wrong). This threatened the college there where there were 1000 students at summer school who had to be evacuated to the beach. Allegedly (I put this in in case my source is incorrect) a 52 year old man and a 22 yr old have been arrested for deliberately starting the fires. Again allegedly a real estate agent was involved to clear the land of pine trees so that planning permission would be given to build there in four or five years as the pine trees would have prevented the building, as they are protected.

The new shops next to the underground car park are due to be completed at the end of the summer and have already been let to, yes wait for it. Banks, insurance companies and restaurants. I am so excited, just put in a few charity shops and it will be like home!

I read a report that said that Pago del Humo suffered one of these fires, I don't suppose you know anything about that do you Glynis?

This was one of those fires but not so severe. It was on the outskirts apparently so would not have affected us.

I remember when looking at a property inland with olive groves being told that there were strict rules about maintaining the land around them to avoid the risk of forest fires. Glynis does this mean I have to bring my old stuff to Chiclna to donate to the charity shops so you can feel really at home, or are you content to browse through second hand castanets and mantillas?? :D

A 21 yr old man has been transferred to Seville prison after confessing to starting fires at campano and pago , faces 10 to 20 yrs in prison , also going to seville prison is a 33 yr old chiclana man accused of trying to set fire to his mother !!

On the wind the beach soccer tournament has been cancelled due to wind havn't been able to play and they say forecast the wind to get worse over the next few days .

My God, he must have been desperate to set fire to your mother. It doesn´t bear thinking about. Can´t wait till Wednesday and to wake up to a light breeze blowing through my hair, although I haven´t got much of it.

I know it´s going back to the old meter business, Dazzle, but, I still don´t understand why you had to pay and not your builder. All we paid was 139 euros connection charge. He paid the fine.

Put it down to peace of mind. Having gone through a year of uncertainty, we just wanted to know that the it was all sorted and we wouldn't be disconnected again. It just wasn't worth going there.........

Well I thought the market had died at the moment.....rising prices, higher fuel costs in Britain. I am sure it will revive again unless there are some dire developments....just hope it doesn't get like Nerja where to buy a new affordable property with 300sq meters of plot is a rarity..

they also do some cracking deals, excellent news that they have opened up here, i got such a good deal on modern taps i took them back to the UK, we got some very funny looks from the airport security, the xray attendant had them going back & forth, & even called over extra staff just to check :scared:

I agree Cigarron is the best.....I never bothered with them when I first arrived but now they are my first port of call. Sometimes they are even cheaper than the supermarkets, Carrefour and Eroski, and the quality is better. In the winter when everyone else had sold out of green wellies they came up trumps, and are endlessly patient, and open on Sundays too. Armed with my dictionary I manage to source nearly any and everything.

The Mayor of Chiclana has categorically stated that the fires were not deliberate and that the ruined pine forests will not be developed as long as he has anything to do with it. I've got 50€ saying that they will !!!!
Another Julian Muñoz ????

How can he state that they were not started deliberately when there have been arrests, surely it´s a matter of waiting for the courts to decide! In the latest one at Roche two men on a motorcycle were seen and are suspects.

Where are the ruined pine forests CDL ?? A campaign to have them re-planted ??

Just a question of time before area of pines developed , todays paper says that the two storey rule is being relaxed in some areas , Chiclana is growing at the rate of 2000 new residents a year , they don't want to widen the area around Chiclana being developed so they will be going up , this will apply mainly to down town area , Chiclana has and is still seeing larger than average house price increases, so with the rich rewards possible will see greed get the better of people when planning decisions area made.

Apparantly, one of the suspects of the original Chiclana fires is someone of 'lower than average intelligence' which is often the case when people are used to start fires for the gain of others (trust me I have exerience of this.)
Whatever people say, a burnt pine is no longer a protected pine because as soon as the growth area is destroyed, the whole tree dies !!
If Chiclana truly is growing at the rate of 2000 residents a year are there any plans to put more petrol stations in the area as I was in a queue 8 cars long this morning to fill up my car. I really do have better things to do !!

Entirely selfish but maybe they will build a wall of flats between me and the Levante...if only the poor souls who buy these flats were aware of this forum they might think differently of front line apartments!! No honestly I would rather have the Levante and the pine forests. I expect they will say they have no money to replant.. maybe we should start a fund and stump them ??

Can't elaborate on the rule Glynis, but in our street there are several 2 storey villas in an area where I though it was all supposed to be single storey. One had a new tower added the week we were there last, which went up in no time. One day it was breeze block being laid, the next it was all plastered and roofed. My Spanish neighbour assures me they are all illegal, completely and utterly. When I asked if the Ayuntamiento could have them demolished he said highly unlikely, in fact almost certainly not!!

Well i suppose if somebody made a denuncia and they are illegal the authorities would have to do something if only fining them. Does the tower affect your privacy? Do you know what the two storey large building opposite Florentinas is going to be? It looks too big for a house!

No it's a fair way away and I must admit looks rather attractive framed by some large palm trees. Cannot say I noticed the two storey building opposite the Florentina.. have you asked them ?? Perhaps a hotel? I always got the feeling that Pago del Humo wouldn't stay that rural for much longer...too near the town and beaches too.

The general rule for developing in the area is ground floor +2 as the maximum , as in the Uk there is a distinct lack of affordable housing , so in the down town areas and the new development at San Jaime they are relaxing the ruling to allow 7 and 8 storey buildings ,you never Know here but if you built illegally higher than 2 storeys action would be taken .

A Spanish friend in London was asking about the fires that destroyed the pine trees in Chiclana... she had seen it on Spanish TV in her flat in Victoria...maybe with so much exposure, and the ongoing saga in Marbella, people will be less keen to flout the regulations publicly ??
