Re: Channel Five

check that your sky card is correctly in the slot - and in the correct slot.

when a sky box is turned off (by a power cut) and is turned back on without a sky card in, channel 104,105 180 etc do not appear in the channel numbers, and you get the red strap saying channel unavailable. also, you r bbc1 region defaults to London, and your ITV defaults to Central - god knows why they are different regions..!?!?!?

so take the card out, make sure it is the right way round (the arrow on the card show which way round it should be inserted:eek:), and make sure it goes into the Sky View Card slot - NOT the interactive card slot....wait a few seconds for the box to update the regional data and bingo bango bongo c5 should be there...

Sorry to sound ignorant - but can you subscribe to Sky ?? Just not long moved out - and have had the delight of loosing TV with telemicro- however have been informed rightly or wrongly that the freeview channels will be back on. Was also informed that the other company we then thought of going too "Superbeam" - was also next on the hit list. So still working my way through DVD collection - until i know what is a safe investment.

was strange..............the power did go off briefly earlier - I forgot I couldn't have the washing machine, plancha & fryer on at the same time:o:frown: - but that was hours ago & the channels were Ok when we re-booted (or whatever you call it)
then suddenly, just before he panicked & posted the Q, they just went!

then - just as suddenly - they came back again!

They are all still available through your own dish and decoder, unlikely to be available ever again from the rebroadcasters. So you will need a dish big enough for your area (if you are near Alicante, that will probably mean a 2.4 metre dish) and a Sky box and card. You will have to source those locally or from Ebay, as Sky cannot supply to a non UK address.

Can you get your Sky box and card back from your old house and set up your account again payed from a UK bank? If you can that is the simplest way forward.

Re: Channel Five

remember that bbc,itv and c4 are free and require no subscription at all to sky.
five, five us fiver, sultana sports news, sky three all require a freetoview FTV sky card - pay for it get these channels with no other monthly payments!
five will be available totally free by the end of the year - but dont know the specifics or signal availability yet. five us and fiver will not be going free for the foreseeable future.

if youare unable to get your old box from you olf house, and you need a new sky box and are getting a sky subscription, consider going for a sky+box - the recording functions are free with any sky subscritpion - and it is a most excellent bit of kit - you will need ensure you have a minimum of a doulbe output LNB on the dish and two cables from the dish to the sky+ box.
becarful when getting a sky card from ebay (if they are even allowed to sell them on there - ithink they are removed quickly!) as to gain access to the sky card account you will need the details for the card - like the uK address andname of the card holder.
best to try and get your old card, and start up you r old subscription again. failing that, get someone in the UK to order a card on your behalf....

How I have missed my Skyplus. Down to watching a Lindsay Lohan teen flick last night so times ARE bad! Never mind should be up and running soon. Got a new box from Melksham Satellites in the UK which a friend then brought out for us, so just waiting for it to be fitted. Sad isn´t it!

Kat - don´t do anything - We are on Superbeam (chaps who owns property had it installed) and yes we have lost a lot of channels - just bear in mind that it is actually illegal to have Sky in Spain (no matter what anyone tells you) so save your pennies!

It is not illegal to receive Sky, it is against their terms and conditions, very different. Also, after the first year of your contract, you can do as you wish with the receiver.
The bit that is totally illegal, is the rebroadcasting.

Again, NO.

it is NOT illegal to have sky in spain. A sky contract has not been incorporated into spanishlaw, and this not illegal.
you are however breaking the terms and conditons of the sky contract, which state the card cannot be used outside of the uk, and if sky find out that your card is being used outside the uK they will terminate the contract and disable the card.

it is illegaal to rebroadcast ANY TV cannels (free of pay) without the correct permissions.

if you or anyone are concerned about the legality of the channels they are rebroadcasting, go to their office and ask to see the official contracts with bbc, itv, c4, fiver, sky, and the other channels owners. they should have one contract per channel they are rebroadcasting. if they cannot show you one, then that are showing those channels without permission, and thus illegally rebroadcasting them.

using a canal+ card in the UK is not illegal.....again you will only be breaking the terms and conditions of canal+ contract. a sky contract is not part of uk law. a canal+ contract is not part of uk law. if you disagree show me the section of UK law that says so...

admittadly (sp?), there is the case of pubs using digitalalbs (or greek?) card for showing the 3pm football, but these are on commercial premesis, which have a whole host of rules and regulations...and sky and the fa are fighting htis as we speak in the courts - and the fa have stopped digitalb from showing 3pm football....

So another question then please - we rent our property the owner has tv channels installed via Superbeam in Quesada and obviously there are problems. Is there anything that I can buy (legally) to watch say the BBC channels, ITV channels and I would really have liked channels 4 and 5. Obviously do not want to get any sort of satellite dish (the community would keel over in a dead faint!). The television we have we did purchase in Spain.

yes - a sky card will only show sky sports and aky movies on its "home" receiver, the receiver that the sky has the card matched to - hence the "message this card is in the wrong settop box". you can get some recivers that are able to read these card and show sky sport and movies, but htese recivers require "reprogramming" and do lack the sky guide - they just have now and next informtion.

Never EVER power up the sky receiver whilst pressing the back up button on the receiver unless you are certain you are getting a good signal - this action gets the sky receiver to try and download any new software - a process that the reciver will do automatically anyway - so there is no real need to do it anyway!!

Are you saying that the reciver did have power, did the green power light show, what was the message on the screen (you may ghave to do the old "default transponder trick" to hlp boot your receiver - see my FAQ page.

had a few of these recently - diagnosis is a poorly receiver - something to do with power supply to the rest of the receiver. it can be repaired, but you never knowwhat else has been damaged....

it all boils down to what the repair cost , are the parts available (this is Spain, in August, suppliers are closed - heard that a few times last week!!), and of course how much is a new one.....or a second hand one - have a few here.....
