Hi ! If you should 'loose' your UK licence apply to DVLA for a replacement (only applicable if you still have a UK address of course - which will of course be the one on your licence anyway) Once you have a duplicate licence use this one to give to the Spanish traffico. You can then 'find' your 'lost'one to go rent a car or whatever.

Thanks for the suggestion - do you think there's a possibility DVLA will know I'm resident in Spain (don't see how??) Any idea how long it takes to get a replacement from DVLA??

I am wondering, is this really worth worrying about? So what if you might have to return to UK and can't hire a car for a month or so. Public transport is not THAT bad and think of the money you would save:thumbsup:

I arrived at Coventry airport a year ago to collect a pre booked car (and I was a regular user with them) and they initially refused to give me the car because I had not got a copy of a utility bill with my address on it. I was about an hour before they finally managed to get hold of a manager and get the OK. Different renters, different policies

Re: Changing U.K. licence for Spanish -
No, according to the DVLA an EU licence can be exchanged even if it has expired.

I lost my UK License once, and was visiting England and landed at Cardiff Airport. Car Rental company called DVLA and gave them my particulars, whereby the hire company handed me the phone so I could verify to DVLA that it was ok to discuss my particulars - DVLA to HIRE COMPANY. I did so, then the company spoke with DVLA again and I was good to go.. Easy |
