I had to on mine in the UK too.

Our existing mortgage is with Banesto which we took out 4 years ago and because we already had a life insurance policy taken out in the UK we didn't need to take out another one. Therefore reluctant to change to Barclays if it means taking out another insurance policy.

Yes I have heard of this many times, suma bills, direct debits, water, electricity. They seem to be able to track you down even when you move accounts. I heard a story where the local bank took money from a father's accoun tot pay his son's debt at the same branch !!!

However the local village banks seem generally much more friendly and personal (some say too much so!!!) but I like it. It's quaint.
