Default Cars again

Hi all
We have a car in Spain english plates but LHD and as we are not resident (only come over from the UK 3 or 4 times a year for 3 weeks at a time) but would like to keep this car in Spain rather than drive it back to uk to MOT it every year.

Can a non resident register a car in spain?

Is it possible to register on Spanish temporary tourist plates as we would not be using it for more than 6 months of the year?

We have a property in spain and NIE no.

the sensible option would be to sell the car but we like it, know it, and it is ultra reliable and want to find the best way of keeping it for use on our Spanish trips.

Thanks in anticipation

Martin

When we first bought our house, we brought over our enginlish car, and transferred it on to Spanish plates and left it in Spain - we engaged a gestoria and she did everything, i seem to remember it cost about 600€ including the first ITV - i think the costs go on age and make of car - she looked up the price from a chart she had - hubby changed the lights etc over himself, so this was not much of an expense.

We have since changed to a LHD car - got fed up with trying to get out of carparks and pay the tolls on the motorway when there was only 1 person in the car -

Don't know about anything about tourist plates - that was not mentioned when we did our transfer

... I think you'll find that you have to be resident and even on the 'padron'.

No, if OP has an NIE and is on the padron they can register their car. Either DIY or via one of the many companies who advertise that service.

He should not be on the padron if he is not resident in Spain.

Quite correct. Contrary to what some people say, including the town hall, you are only eligible to sign on the padron if your "habitual" residence is in that community. Habitual in this context means that you spend the majority of you life in that property.

That said, many non residents own Spanish registered cars and although they may have "illegally" signed onto the padron at least they are not driving around in totally illegal UK registered cars!
