Default Car road tax costs?

I've heard that Spain is to introduce road tax on the vechicle emissions.

Does anyone know the costs and what the Co2 bandings will be?

It depends on which tax you mean.

The tax to first register a car is now based on emissions but the annual road tax is still based on fiscal horsepower.

The bands for the registration tax are:-

CO2 emission of less than 120g/Km = 0% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of between 120-160 g/Km = 4.75% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of between 160-200g/Km = 9.75% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of more than 200g/Km = 14.75% of the vehicle value

Its the matriculation tax that you pay when you buy a new car. It is also the tax that you pay when you re register a foreign car onto Spanish plates.

Most people (certainly on this forum) know about the re registration tax but don't realise that everyone pays it when they buy a new car. The difference is that the tax is included in the advertised price of the car.

if your importing a car than there is a chance you may have to pay the emsions tax. Really depends where you go. Of 6 people I know who have imported cars, only 2 had to pay it.

The form is Modela 576 and it is a real nightmare to set up. Spanish bureaucracy at it's best

find a gestoria to do it for you and with a bit of luck you'll avoid paying it.

You can only avoid the tax if you re register the car at the same time (or shortly after) you apply for residency.

You need a form from the British Embassy but if you have that then the tax is not charged.
