The relevant part being-
"You may bring into Spain your EU registered car without further formality but you may not use it in Spain for more than 6 months in a calendar year. If you spend more than 6 months in any year in Spain, you will be considered resident and consequently you must obtain full national plates and pay the special vehicle registration tax (impuesto municipal sobre circulación de vehÃculos). "

Well it crossed my mind you might be,but the same thing applies.
You still need to wear trousers before jumping in here amongst the local rottweilers, or better still a suit of armour.
However pleased you survived the initial attack, made your point well, and live to fight another day...seems the hounds have mostly gone quiet for now,...touch wood..........shhhhhhhhhhhh,.......say no more,...let sleeping dogs lie........

When you posted a lot of us all had the same impression that you lived here in Spain. Had you said you didnt live here and were not a resident then people, including me, would have been clear and you would probably have had a different response.
So far from apologies being issued, I think its a good example of how people need to be specific when discussing this thorny subject
Now we should move on

I do want to get on with other members here so I shall try to be more careful in my postings in future. Now - back on topic. We will be leaving our UK home and moving over permanently at the end of November. Would we be better off changing the lights and plates on our UK car - bearing in mind that it's getting on a bit now and done numerous long trips - or buying Spanish which are more expensive than the equivalent cars in the UK?

Yes - I will concede that my original post did appear misleading - as a newbie I just didn't realise the extent of the can of worms I was opening

At least then there can be no doubt about you being on the roads legally. I have a RHD (as well as a LHD) car but prefer to drive LHD vehicles as, despite what others will tell you, they are a lot safer.

I brought my English car to Spain and kept it here for many years, properly importing it after a year or two to make it legal.
Eventually I realised that there are many occasions when a right hand drive car is positively dangerous on European roads, for example when joining a motorway, or a simple right turn where your vision is less than it would be with a left-hand-drive.
I felt much safer when I changed to a Spanish car, and the Guardia Civil trafico are more friendly too. I love it when they salute you after giving you a ticket, When I had the English car they were unfriendly and kept on saying, “Mis huevos,†when I tried to explain.
