cancelling car registration???? help needed
Hello Everyone
we need a little help/advice and are a bit lost!! we lived in Spain until April 2007 and moved to Portugal with a Spanish Car driving it here illegally for a year or 2 . finally we have decided to Buy Portuguese and we have sold our Spanish car for Pieces to a breakers yard, we have been in touch with the Car people in Velez Malaga and they have sent us the Tax Due amount which we can pay here into Santander (we think) but we cannot find out exactly what we should do to "de-register" the car In Spain so that we are not due for Tax in 2010 onwards... we have been on the www.dgt.es website and in my Bad Spanish have understood only that we should take it along for de-registering ???? this is clearly not possible now and we would welcome any help/advice from anybody who knows what we should do to clear it from the SPANISH SYSTEM. any help would be appreciated!! Please I speak some spanish and i rand the Trafico dept but its just an information number. and told me to look at the website thanks PAUL,n, Sue |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
If it were me, I would contact a spanish solicitor and get them to do it.
I am not too impressed that you drove it illegally for a year or two and I hope you had valid insurance? Dread to think what might have happened had you caused injury or death to some innocent 3rd party. |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
hi there
thanks for the advice! we did have Insurance and have only cancelled it yesterday with Abbeygate. i am not impressed either, a little ignorance to start with followed by Laziness really, we paid 3500 euros for the car and it would have been 3500 to Matriculate. in the end we got 475 euros 190 of which has to go t Paying Back tax to SPAIN paying a solicitor is not on already in significant loss country.. thanks for replying though PAUl |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
It should of been scrapped in Spain along with the receipt for the car tax, log book, your nie number and the required paperwork, I doubt if you can now remove it from the system.

DOH!

Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
Obviously you could DIY. I guess the first stop would be to visit traffico and you may have to go to the office where the car was registered?
IMHO, it might not cost so much to get a solicitor and worth getting a quote? I could not be arsed with the hassle of changing my UK for spanish license. My solicitor did it all for 45€. Money well spent I thought :D |

Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
actually we checked (rather late BTW) and they hinted it could be as much as.
but i will check out the Solicitor route as 45e looks like it might be very cheap in the long run we now live a 8 hour Drive from MALAGA so going to the Trafico is not an option thanks |

How can an illegal car have insurance - you sure can't do that it England and I'm sure Spain is the same:confused: RE. your original question - have you tried at the town hall. Friends of mine did it there recently when they scrapped their car. |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
hi there
It was insured, as it was registered at our old address in SPAIN and the TAX was only Overdue (paid today) It DId not have the MOT but that does not make the Insurance Invalid according to ABBEYGATE, anyway luckilly we had no issues. i will also ask at the town hall to see if they can help cheers |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
it will pay you do use a solicitor
we did this for our Spanish car in Feb this year You have to go to traffico with the original paperwork for the car, fill in some forms to de-register it and thats it

Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
In Spain, the procedure means a visit to Trafico for some minor form filling, and then taking the forms to your local Suma office, where your tax bill is cancelled.
If you don't do that, Suma will send a yearly bill to the registered Spanish address. Depending on your status at that address, you may not have a problem at all. |

Believe me, they still keep adding it on and a bank account is accessable to any debt collector. |

Wrong , you are living under Spanish law not English ,so many forget this, your insurance can be valid in spain without uk mot or road tax -fact. |

Why does it need matriculated? Did you mean matriculated in Portugal? So he has no paperwork to get it off the Spanish system and the bills will add up till they swoop in for the dosh. |

Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
Here’s my personal experience, relatively recent.
I bought a Spanish car, privately, and had it registered in my name. A year later, I sold the car, privately, and foolishly deducted the re-registration cost so that the honest buyer could deal with the re-registration procedure himself (he wanted to). I bought another Spanish car, privately, and had it registered in my name. For the next two years or so, I paid the Suma bill when it arrived, until I realised that I was still paying for the old car as well (it was the same make as the new one and I didn’t bother to check the registration number). I then found that my honest buyer was in fact a car dealer, who hadn’t registered the car and sold it on to someone who had expected him to be honest, which he wasn’t. The car was then scrapped, after an accident. Luckily I still had some copy documents and went to Trafico at Alicante. It was surprisingly easy for them to give me documents to take to the local Suma to stop them sending me tax bills, but refunds were just laughed at, and I had paid two years tax for a vehicle I had sold. Another lesson in life. |
Re: cancelling car registration???? help needed
HI Guys again
Missile, Yes after we had been here 183 days or so you are supposed to matriculate any car you brought into the country with you (from Wherever) which we neglected to do imm ediately and it got forgotten and nobody stopped us. eventually we started feeling guilty and a little scared by the Police stopping foreign Cars. so we finally bought a Portuguese car and left the Spanish one for a couple of months on the drive while i advertised it on EBAY and couple other places. problem is it became Complicated, as we had no ITV , the tax was not a problem as i called VELEZ MALAGA and they sent me a form to pay the back tax at SANTANDER Totta, which we have until the 21/09 to do. so the Tax will be paid because the car is registered at our old Landlord in MALAGA province and we don,t want them having any issues. Getting the ITV was complicated because it meant driving 150k to Salamanca and finding an inspection centre and stopping to find out what if anything was wrong and having it fixed inside the time allowed. and returning it to there for and up to date ITV and then trying to sell it in Spain(from Portugal) for its real worth (about 12-1500 Euros) as you see its very complicated, so i flogged it to a Portuguese breakers yard for 500 euros, thinking that would be the end. but when i called VELEZ MALAGA AGAIN they said we would have to remove it Via the TRAFICO and thats where my question came in.. the matriculation costs to a PT plate we were told was punitive which is why we were getting rid of it thanks |

If the car is put on bajo then at least taxes owed should not increase? Better use a gestor than a solicitor for a matter like this ,solictors will be many many times more expensive for a simple job. |
