Camera insurance.

I don't want to start a debate about the rights and wrongs of taking out camera insurance. I'd just like to know from anyone who does have such insurance who their provider is so that I can get some quotes and make an informed decision please. PM if you'd prefer.

Not in Spain, so not sure how it works there, but in UK my gear was covered under my house insurance (including away from home) I think it was up to a value of around £2,000 each item. Does the Spanish insurance offer something similar? As my camera body alone costs more than that, I itemised the gear which is listed separately and am covered up to £10,000,(?) the increase in my annual payment was hardly noticeable. I dropped and damaged a 100-400mm lens quite badly (cost £1,300) and they repaired it without any hassle whatsoever. A stand alone policy is a lot more expensive, with lots of restrictions, and if you are pro, a lot more expensive!

My house insurance has sections where you can list the items such as a camera but not sure whether this is the norm or not.

Thanks all, it's what I did when living in UK but my current insurer here won't touch it which surprised me and my broker wasn't very confident getting alternative cover for the sort of value I'm after. Somebody thought that Linea Directa may do it on house insurance and I will contact them as mine is up for renewal shortly and thanks Fred, I'll check out Ibex at the same time.

Do they cover you if you're living in Spain? had a quick look at their T&C's and it says.
IMHO if a household policy is the same in Spain as in UK (and it looks like it is) that should be adequate for your needs. I've got more than twice £3k's worth in my bag and value my equipment highly, but I see no need for a separate camera insurance policy. And having made an expensive claim I know it works. If the max. amount you can claim covers your individual equipment, you're fine, if not itemise it and pay a little extra. Be careful in Spain with robberies though, cover for hurto and robo are usually treated quite differently.
) Do you only cover UK residents?
Yes. You must be a resident of, and domiciled in, the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Northern Ireland. Sorry, we cannot cover residents of Eire.

. Many home insurance policies are limited when you are out of the house, although they cover you fully in the house. I guess its a matter of checking what the limits areThanks for pointing out the residency clause, I'd have to look into it a little more deeply

I limit myself with what I take out with me as some of the lens cost way more than the camera so I wouldnt be taking £6k out with me

Agree entirely, you need to be sure it covers what you want, I made a point of speaking with them to ensure that. I've tried leaving lenses at home,(the weight factor as well!) trouble is it always turns out to be the one's I need. I never go anywhere without the body (5d Mk 3) with a 24-105 on the front, and a 100-400mm, that's nearly £5k on it's own. Often if you make a claim on travel insurance they first refer you to your household insurance, as that covers the loss.
