Depends on what you call expensive. If you have owned it for more than 6 months then there is no import registration tax to pay. You have an IVA test and re register it. A gestoria will do it for you for anyhting between 500 & 900 euros. You must do it within 30 days of residencia though.

I know of people who have bought 4 x 4's over here and registered them .... Im not sure but I believe this relates to the pick up variety as they are classed as commercial vehicles.

I like to be different.

I was quoted 700 euros for re-registration which is fine by me - but that I will fall foul of the 6 months pre-ownership (I need the vehicle for September) and I will not be taking up a Residencia as I will not be staying in Spain for more than 2 or 3 months per year.

Us tourists! Who needs 'em?

I've done a quick back check on the 4wd situation and you are right, it does refer to commercial vehicles, however, there is a warning that there are on-going crackdowns on the importation of all RHD vehicles and a total ban could be not too far away.

But we must bear in mind that the OP was seeking opinions on importing a LHD vehicle purchased in the UK, so maybe I should not have muddied the waters - I was concerned about mention of bringing in a Land Rover (for the sake of the potential importer).

mmm interested in the comments re landrover and 4wd, does this additional tax burden apply if the vehicle is registered to a business and it is actually classified as a van? - just curious we will no doubt find out more when we are there next wee

In general, you are not allowed to import commercial vehicles iirc

Hi - am facing same problem and have looked in the UK and in Spain for an MPV - Galaxy/Alhambra/Sharan but to no avail. Called to three dealerships around the Malaga area last week, all had models advertised but none in stock - "We will have it available tomorrow" or words to that effect.

I believe that LHD registered in the UK would be expensive to re-register in Spain (unless it originated in Spain of course) as the taxes are based on the vehicle value. I also believe that certain RHD (4WD) vehicles cannot be re-registered in Spain as they (the Government) also now have concerns regarding the environment.

So - maybe a business opportunity for an ex-pat in Spain to collate and negotiate the purchase of used LHD cars in readiness for us newbies to clinch a deal? Having said that - I do have a 2003 Ibiza (Spanish registered and located in Spain) to p/ex, so my hands are tied more than many.

Look forward to more opinions on this - and thanks to the OP.

have dealt with a few car dealers here and the way it works (how I see it anyway) is you go in and tell them what you want, model, price etc etc and they have a list of all the other dealers in Spain and what is available - so basically get one in for you

they dont seem to be open for negotiation on prices and NEVER ring you when they say they will !!! ( but thats Spain I suppose) its as though they couldnt really care less if you bought a car or not

A levy of 4% seems to ring a bell somewhere - but the 4wd info I was quoting was from the www.livespainforlife.co.uk and contains amendments as and when the writer received them.

Hope this will be of use.

No if you keep it as a private vehicle and you've owned it for 6 months or more then you don't get hammered for the tax as long as you re reg it here within 30 days of taking residencia

We were told if you don't get rid of a u.k car after 6 months it can be enpounded by customs?

Hi Silverchick! If you want to check out the exact price of any new car purchased in Spain, you can go on to the manufacturers site for that country and check out all the prices. For example, Landrover is http://www.landrover.es If you want to check out other manufacturers, just type in www. followed by the manufacturer like Ford or Nissan etc, and then add es at the end. That will then give you an exact price of any make and model so you can make your comparisons to UK prices. Hope this helps! Good luck.
Chris
