Bullfighting Poll.

Right, it had to happen, lets try not to fight, just vote, it doesn't mean a thing I know but lets just see.

Well yet again the poll didn't work, don't know why but its not the first time, so lets just take a hand count eh?

I have stayed out of the Bullfighting fray so far, but here goes:

Bullfighting, on those rare occurances when it goes perfectly, or even well can be IMO a artfull if not beautiful event to witness. One has to submerge oneself into the event, to partake of the Fiesta if you will...a bota of good Ribera del Duero Tinto, a bocata de chorizo or Longaniza...and someone well versed in the Fiesta to explain it to you. I have witnessed events so skillfully done they made you want to cry...especially those done in the Rejon style (all on horseback)- some of the most perfectly trained Andaluz Stallions in the world.

For those who wish to see a small sample of Rejoneo:
LINK

That being said, very often it is a bloody, awful spectacle to witness that also leaves one needing a good cry.

I guess after my 30 year love affair with Spain and all things Spanish, I still am ambivilant on the subject

Have NEVER been to a bull fight, do not want to, but have been into bull ring up in Mijas Pueblo, the smell is enough to put anyone off for life.

Our son, who agrees with everything Spanish, says that the meat from the bull fights goes to the orphanages/childrens hospitals,, do not know if true or not ??

Good on you Mrs jdr, I dont personally think anyone should be forced to do something they dont want to.

The bit about the meat is true. I am trying to remember what it is called, it has a specific name.

It is called 'Toro de Lidia', and it is not given to orphanages- it is sold to carnicerias/butcher shops where it is highly valued for it's taste...something about the muscles being engorged with blood from the exertion of the bullfight. It usually can only be found during Fiestas, when there are local bullfights. Many resturants also have specialties using Toro de Lidia, though for every pound of real Toro, I bet 9 mpre are served of just plain cows.

A few blogs do say that the meat is sold and the proceeds go to orphanages, but I have not found anything substanitive to confirm that...my Spanish wife says it is probably an urban myth.

Some interesting reading for those interested:

Is it a regional thing then? Because I remember having a discussion with some youngsters in a bar in Murcia and them talking about it.

Back in 1971 when on holiday in Spain I was told by a couple of locals that the day after the bull fight the meat was given away to the local needy in the village's near by to where the bullfight had taken place also local hotels bought the meat.
