It had been reported earlier this week that UK citizens could benefit from a six-to-nine-month transition period during which they would continue be treated like EU citizens even under a no-deal.However, the “contingency action plan” published by the commission on Wednesday contains no such arrangement.Instead it spells out how the 1.2 million UK citizens living on the continent will be treated like citizens of any other non-EU country immediately after a no-deal Brexit

If you have lived in Spain legally for 5 years or more you have an absolute right to remain irrespective of Brexit.
People who have never bothered to register may well have problems - what a shame!

Many other non EU citizens seem to do quite nicely thank you. Nothing sells newspapers or wins an election better than a good scare story :-)

Anyone legally registered before the end of March will be entitled to remain irrespective of the 5 year rule. This was outlined very early on. So if you have residence you can still carry on to live here. Even if you do it at the beginning of March. The only thing you wont be able to do is take up residence in other EU countries should you think of moving. Also you will be able to return to UK for a period of 5 years ( not 2) before losing your residential rights.

Woman claimed her daughter, who has been living in Spain for 27 years and is a dual citizen, UK and Spain, has received a letter stating that she has to "immediately give up either her Spanish or British passports as she will no longer be able to hold both once Brexit goes through" .

I should add that whilst the UK gov has guaranteed the rights of existing EU nationals in UK to remain it is true that the EU has not stipulated the same however this is because the event of a no deal seemed so preposterous . However Brussels has always indicated the UK nationals would not be subject to retrospective laws.

It won't be relevant for pensioners anyway.

The passport story is possibly true as Spain has always insisted that you can hold one passport. I think you are meant to hand your UK one on when you receive your Spanish one. The same is not true in UK. So the story is true but I don't think it is related to Brexit

If British citizens become third country nationals on 30 March then they’ll be subject to the immigration rules of their host countries. That doesn’t equate to being ‘illegal’. As it’s already been decided that British citizens will be able to visit the UK for up to 90 days after Brexit without a visa then, in a worst case scenario, you would have three months to regulate your immigration status in your host country. The linked story explains this.

My view is do as much as you can to prepare for this all be it an ever changing thing. If you are living in Spain or elsewhere in the EU but haven't bothered to obtain residency then you have no one but yourself to blame if it all goes pear shaped. In these last few months there will be more and more scare stories, because they are in the press doesn't make them true. Currently UK government are using no deal as a tool to scare public and through them MPs into voting for the deal on offer. If that doesn't work then my view is other things will happen and personally I don't think no deal will be the outcome. If it is I have done as much as I can to safeguard my position rather than just burying my head in the sand.

Which is not quite what was being said on the radio, where besides the fact that it was being directly linked to Brexit, the woman was claiming her daughter had to choose whether she wanted to be a Spanish citizen or a British one, as being dual would no longer be possible.

If you are a citizen of the United Kingdom and apply for Spanish Nationality, you have to renounce your U.K. nationality prior to being granted Spanish Nationality.
I have travelled this road, I was not required to surrender my U.K. passport, the Spanish passport only costs 26 €. so the expensive U.K. passport is now out of the question.
In the eyes of the Spanish authorities, you have single nationality, but the U.K. authorities recognise you as a dual national

The British will lose their right to work and live in the EU with Brexit because they will lose their EU citizenship. So British will need to apply for an appropriate visa - just like a Nigerian would. If they satify the requirements they can stay if not they have to leave. There are many from non-EU countries who would love to live in EU member states but can't because they don't get a visa. So don't fool yourself. After Brexit you will be at the mercy of the Spanish government.
