A Briton to be proud of?

I've never been a huge fan of the Beckhams, or the whole celebrity culture thing, but I do think he's done a very good thing with his latest move to Paris St Germain:

OK, he doesn't need the money, but still not everybody would have done it. Good on him!

He is a good guy, I have never understood why people have a downer on him.
Envy?

I don't follow football much but he seems like a nice guy. However, something doesn't sound right about this...why a Paris charity that he probably knows nothing about:confused: Did they twist his arm Sounds like a load of hype to me. Sceptical...moi, too bloody right:cool:

Nice bit of PR,
.....though I doubt if too many ppl.will be fooled by it.

It must be said he is now a marketable product first and a footballer second and admits he doesn't even expect to make the starting line-up, so that in itself could be reason enough for his actions.

His salary could well be insignificant in comparison to his publicity/marketing/sponsorship value and his income for the same from the club.

Nothing against him myself.
He is over-rated, but that's not his fault, more media hype.

Nothing new anyway,
Less well-off players have been making big donations from income and testimonials to charity for many years.

I believe Niall Quinn ex-Sunderland was one of the first, though he only had a fraction of Beckhams millions and unlike Beckham never attempted to use it as a Worldwide publicity campaign.

I still think he's a sweetie, if a bit intellectually challenged. We could have worse role models.

But don't get me started on Mrs B ... :frown:

perhaps a sweetie because of his looks ? ?

but "intellectually challenged" ? Not so sure about that, just that he is ultra careful as to what he says to ensure he doesn't cause offence in any direction.

as a "role model" well the jury is out on that. Perhaps if he hadn't married that particular Spice then maybe he wouldnt have been pushed in certain directions, even though he did almost break the marriage by moving to Spain.

As to a footballer, well I have said it many times before here - he rarely manages to play a full match, only coming on for a while to score some well laid out goal opportunities.

But, once a celebrity always a celebrity, and he is now a snowball rolling down a hill. As to the future, well he has plenty of money in the bank and really doesn't need any more. not that it will stop him....

And Mrs B ? No need for a jury, petulant, greedy, bad tempered - not happy but stuck with what she has as she really has nothing else !!

I have never understood why people are so vile towards the Beckhams, David in particular. In the so-called "golden generation" of English players he stood alone as always playing with passion and commitment for his country.

A cynic would ask how much is being paid through image rights (or from the Quatari people who own PSG) outside of France - and thus avoiding the 80% income tax on high earners.
But at the least, it does mean the children's charity gets this dosh.

Oh, good for him. Why be so churlish? Does it affect you, me, any of us? No. If money is raised for charity, why not?

Good for him.

He doesn't need the money, nevertheless I do not recall any other football player being so generous?

Sorry, but you're way out of touch with that remark.

However obviously the publicity that Beckham has received compared to others has successfully pulled the wool over your eyes, as it was no doubt meant to do, much to the benefit of Beckhams main line of business.

Furthermore we recently had a discussion on another thread with regard to charity organisations where many of those at the top end were living in absolute luxury with huge salaries and only a mere pittance of the funds which came into their hands were actually passed on to those most in need.

Whilst it is not an exact comparison, certain obvious similarities immediately come to mind.

I hear he´s quoted as being worth £200 million, without his missus's earnings, so no he's hardly going to need it. I don't have anything against the guy, he's done well for himself, good luck to him, but it seems a bit of a stunt when he calls the world's press to tell them of his kindness. Seems his wages from football only account for a third of his earnings, he probably sold as many LA Galaxy shirts as he was going to, now he can sell loads of £90 PSG shirts.;)

Exactly.

Many footballers, coaches and others involved in the game have been giving their best efforts for many years in many different ways to help those in need.

Unlike Beckham they rarely if ever used it as a major personal P.R. campaign combined with a major signing on appearance in order to personally promote themselves.

It reminds me somewhat of the sham that is the New Years honours list.
Those with the right connections, backing and publicity get a gong, regardless wether they deserve it or not, whilst the real unsung heroes are rarely ever heard of.

Jeez, we had sir jimmy saville which was bad enough but even the mere thought of sir D.B. makes me want to puke. yuk!

What a ridiculous comment. No doubt in your mind Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is just a scam to sell more Microsoft products.

As I said, Beckham giving his salary away (circa £3 million I believe) to charity is more than any other football player has done - unless you know different? :amen:

I certainly do hope it helps him sell a few extra footie shirts.

I have no wool over my eyes. I am well aware many charities pay their CEOs obscene ammounts of money. I fail to see the link to David Beckham doing a good deed?

Not ridiculous.

FACT !

In relation to their income there are numerous ppl.in the football world who have given more and made far more personal effort and sacrifices than Beckham to help those in need.

Only difference is Becks or his minders used it as a great PR stunt.

I have little doubt most of the others had the decency to do it for no personal reward and little or no publicity, otherwise you would have been well aware of the fact and not have made your own ridiculous remark in the first instance.
