Border Control

Barriej: Thanks for your visa link. Very helpful.

When we are all opened up again, what I am keen to hear from UK/ESP resident contributors is if their passports are stamped on arrival and departure. This just to gauge how seriously this will be taken given the various issues at any busy airport we are all familiar with. Not limited to - the queues at AGP in July and August.

Regardless I am sure that your movement is electronically noted regardless of a stamp or not & this is what will appear on the border agents screen.

Re: Border Control

UK citizens legally and demonstrably resident in Spain, i.e. residencia or TIE, should not have their passports stamped,

I read somewhere (can't find it now - but NO not on FB or Twitter et al) that procedurally an exit stamp should not be applied to a passport in which no entry stamp exists but that's not to intimate that a new passport will be a guaranteed get out for an overstay.

In any case it will be a one off event as non residents will get a stamp the next time they enter the Schengen area.

But hey, there's are only another 14 days to go until we begin to see how it all pans out in practice.

I will be interested to see if those who can prove resident status will still be required to queue with the herd of non EU passport holders.

What makes you think it will be otherwise?
What makes you think UK passport holder has some kind of super entitlement, that AUS/USA/CAN national resident in Spain doesnt?

Britons are now third country nationals like US citizens etc, except that some of us are beneficiaries of the withdrawal agreement, having a special status in EU not available to other third country nationals. So those with residence document issued under the withdrawal agreement, and the old green certificate, are exempt from some of the scrutiny and the stamping of passport with Schengen entry/exit stamp. Whether it makes sense to create a separate line for them at EU borders is something open for discussion.

British are Expats, everyone else is a foreigner, immigrant, migrant or asylum-seeker.

It is how the British see themselves.

Do the Spanish call the British expats in Spanish? Nop!

End of the non-EU queue now please. Brexit dividend....

But hey ho, we can wave our new blue passports...

Having travelled extensively over the years, I find the 'foreigners' queue at airports is faster than the others.
All the British travelling home after their holidays will be ushered through the UK passport holders only route, so that will be nice and fast.

I had heard (and I think it may have been mentioned here) that the TIE might be accepted by the automatic barrier at EU airports, I know the German and Italian Id cards work in these . Might be worth a try.

I don't, but many Brits do. Brexit is the gift that keeps on giving.

I flew Malaga to London on Saturday (13th) and can confirm all passports in the queue ahead of me were being stamped.

I am just waiting on collecting my TIE card, and I have a "Regresso" letter. My passport was not stamped. I am flying back to Spain on Tuesday through Madrid so will be interesting to see what happens on entry.

Interestingly enough, EU citizens can still use the E-gates at Heathrow.

E-gates at UK ports are for a number of nationalities considered 'safe', such as US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean etc, as well as EU citizens.

In the past Gibraltar was not included in the list of EU countries at UK entry points, therefore I used what I considered was the fastest moving queue without any problem.

Another point:- The Spanish Ministry for the interior has dismantled the biometric readers that it installed at the frontier in 2015

Of course, and it's a bugger for EU/non-EU families.

Would this be due to Spain considering that Gibraltar is now in the Schengen area?

Gibraltar is not in the Schengen area and personally I doubt it will be in the near future.

But we will have to have patience and wait and see

So Gibraltar and Northern Ireland have acquired a new kind of citizen status under this Brexit.

We have British citizens travelling to British territories being required to produce passports to enter...

Then we have other within the United Kingdom who have issues with importing exporting good...

Proper Brexit botch, if you ask me....

Well done Boris...

And Priti Patel now wants to send asylum seekers to Gibraltar and the Isle of Man, amongst other places, to processing centres whilst their claims are being dealt with. Except that both Gibraltar and the IOM have said they know nothing of such plans and will not have anything to do with them.

I have read somewhere that as a 10yr TIE holder that I can join my Irish wife in the EU queue with my TIE and UK passport. I suspect that my TIE will also allow me to use the machine readers where there is a slot for ID CARDS.

My child has a EU passport I dont. He will be separated from me at passport control so not sure why you should get a free pass if a 16 old doesn't

I thought an ABC gate needed the passport or card to have a chip, something the TIE doesn't have.

Edit: I've just realised it has the chip symbol on it so I guess it's embedded inside it.

From this link it says if one has Spanish residency but are UK citizens they need residency certificate or TIE and passport to enter. Only thing as a resident they don't need is a long stay visa.

I can't understand why there would or should be any difference when producing either a permanent or temporary residence TIE to enter Spain? Other than if a person with a temporary one has been out of Spain longer than 6 months. That is my understanding of the difference between the two types of TIE card one allows the resident to leave Spain for 6 months the other for 5 years, both cards otherwise allow the 3rd country national to reside full time in Spain.

Yes, when non-EU national is accompanied by EU national partner, both will be allowed in EU queue, but not in electronic gates.
Fact that you have TIE is irrelevant in this case, unless you are traveling on your own.
Only EU national ID cards can be used in ID cards slots.

Not really, depending on child's age, you might be able to both use EU lane together.
If child is underage, you as carer/parent are allowed to accompany him/her in EU lane.

After looking at all the comments I have carefully examined my TIE and despite having lots of anti counterfeiting measures it does not have a chip so I guess my fingerprints are not stored on the card. Someone also commented that despite having a chip the UK passport was not much better so I will give a go in the machines next time we exit Schengen if it doesn’t work I can always turn round and go to the manned gate. Some time to wait until I can conduct the test. I will post the result on here either way about June I guess. Coming back from Ireland after Christmas I accompanied my wife with her Irish passport to the manned desk with my UK passport and TIE No problems except I think it was the first one they had seen at Faro so it was shown across a few desks out of interest.

bobd22 Mar 19th 2021 5:18 am

Re: Border Control

I thought the fingerprints were somehow held on the TIE card, are they not checked against the new card when attending to collect the new card?

Fred James Mar 19th 2021 5:53 am

Re: Border Control

As DLC posted, the card has a chip symbol on it, so it is reasonable to assume that it is embedded somewhere in the card with all your other details, otherwise it would not be machine readable which somewhat would defeat the object of an electronic ID. Spanish DNI cards are chipped as are all the latest passports.

The lady who processed my application last week confirmed that they check your prints when you collect the card (now whether they are on the card or not is another matter).

According to the paperwork available for the DNI.
The TIE shares some of the same parts. Both are biometric using a small embedded chip that has all of your data, including fingerprints, DOB, etc.
The DNI card also has a RFI wireless chip that will set off certain scanners (works like the chip in your dog)
My permit to drive Cherry Pickers and vertical lift machines has the same chip and identifies my to the machine allowing me to drive it without a key (the little one in Carrefour Benidorm beeps at me as I walk past it) :)

It needs one of us to see if the card is accepted at the auto machines at the airports (wouldn't bother with the ones in the Uk)

bobd22 Mar 19th 2021 6:40 am

Re: Border Control

Yes definitely biometric symbol in green top left of my wifes card. So I think it's safe to say the card has a chip embedded somewhere.
