Reading the Kindle thread shows that there are a lot of avid readers out there so how about telling us about great books that you have read or authors that you recommend.

My personal favourite authors at the present time ar Steig Larrson, Carlos Ruis Zapon and Markus Zusak.

I've tried reading the Larsson books but frankly couldn't see what all the hype was about, I found them quite turgid.

A friend recently lent me "The Long Road Home" by Rose Tremain, which I really enjoyed. It's the story of an Eastern European immigrant to the UK.

I have most of Rose Tremains books she is an excellent writer. Another good one is Kate Atkinson.

I have to agree with you , The Long Road Home is an excellent book and puts immigrant life in the Uk into perspective. I have to disagree with you over the Larsson trilogy, since reading them I have found other books lacking in depth and Lisbeth has to be one of the greatest anti heroines ever.
Still everyone to their own taste. Anyway good reading.
What are your ideas re the Kindle?

I don't have a Kindle, although I have friends who are converts. I might consider one if I were going on a long haul holiday maybe, instead of trying to cram a dozen paperbacks into a suitcase as I used to, but otherwise reading from a screen just doesn't have the same appeal as a crisp new book.

I am just not a gadget person though, I didn't have a mobile phone until I moved to Spain and we didn't have a landline here. I still hardly ever use it.

The kindle is brilliant, and I've read the Larsonn books on it, I found them exellent. One of the main values of the kindle is the number of books you can have 'with you' at any time, I've just loaded ALL the Clive Cussler books onto mine, the have replaced all the JD Robb ones which I've read, in chronological order, and even better thay have aall been FREE.

Yes, they are detective stories, set in about 2060. Lot's of gadgets, some of which are probably not far away from being true..

Cor that's good - Ian loves his books and has read them all - the hardbacks are now available for clients in the office!!! LOL.

Don't know whether I would like to read books on a machine though - mind you not a lot of room at home!

Exactly, would be ideal for you, 3,500 books, all in a device no larger than a paperback, and only a third the thickness, ideal for caravan dwellers..
