it was a bit windy yesterday.............
but I had no idea it was this windy!
http://www.lasprovincias.es/valencia...-20090918.html a tornado briefly hit the coast & destroyed the terrace of one restaurant in 3 seconds! |
Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
I've seen quite a few out to sea off the coast of XÃ bia, especially in the winter months when they seem to be quite common, but this is the first time I've seen one strike land! Awesome! And it seems Sod's law that it strikes one of the busier restaurants along the Arenal; shame it couldn't have been a few metres to the left and got rid of that awful Sacrament! ;)
A mate phoned me last night and warned me that he'd been told that the Guardia Civil was telling everyone to go home and batten down the hatches as the worst Gota Fria in living memory was about to hit the area; he'd been ringing everyone he knew. I looked outside and the wind had dropped and the sky was clearing. I asked him where he got the information from and he (rather sheepishly) admitted that some bloke down the pub had told him! Don't you just love that! Needless to say, this morning broke lovely and warm and no sign of "killer floods"! John C |

Where though? The severe gota fria storms tend to strike a small area rather than a whole coast or region. For instance, when Javea got hit a couple of years ago, places a few klicks up and down the coast were largely unscathed. These storms tend to be quite local, hence their perceived severity.
I think the general word on the tele is that it this will be a bad year for them |

I couldn't open the link. What happened and which restaurant was hit?
Austriaco on the Arenal - a tornado actually 'landed' - straight into their terrace & out again I'll look for some links - it was all over the national news yesterday |

Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
The storms are still continuing here- almost every day and they start at the same time in the afternoon.
We know of many people with leaks and floods which have taken them by surprise and they have lived here for years. Even spanish people are saying its the worst theyve known. This morning is freezing with grey sky and rain. Is it like this in other areas. Is this winter now-it seems too early. |

I've heard that we need to batten down the hatches tomorrow - they are expecting more rain then than 'ever before'

Tuesday not so bad so far - dd2 is going to a party & they have a bouncy castle - I know the house is pretty big, but I doubt they'll have room for it indoors, so lets hop it doesn't rain! |
Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
I wonder if the Spanish are as 'fixated' about the weather as us Brits.
|
Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
I heard on the radio this afternoon that the CdS is expected to get very heavy rain from the north tomorrow - the skies in that direction are already rather cloud-laden. Still, to be boring, we need it... (though my verandah roof doesn't:eek:

Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
I doubt that you will get rain tomorrow - Sat/Sun looks more likely.

Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
Been told that what we have had and are still going thru is gota fria.
It has rained heavily and mostly with horrible storms for over a week. It has a real pattern and we have learnt to tell the time of day by it. The worst is when we are driving - can be scary. Would like to see a whole day of sun.:( |

Every year I've been here we've had something - heat, rain, hail, snow, wind, sun... and every time it's more [ ]ier than it's ever been according to the Spanish. Not fixated, but they do moan a lot about the weather!
Two people died recently in the intense rain and floods around Jaen, they were swept away in their cars |

Spain gets more intense weather than Britain. More intense heat, more rain in a short space of time, more snow etc (depending where you are). And people die when there is extreme weather which is why it makes the news.
Two people died recently in the intense rain and floods around Jaen, they were swept away in their cars I certainly don't remember anything like 'yellow pre-emergency' 'orange pre-emergency' 'red emergency' being on the weather reports as a matter of course in the UK our green 'sense risc' has been upgraded to yellow 'risc' today - and I was woken up by the cat freaking out at the huge thunder clap a while ago:eek: |
Re: it was a bit windy yesterday.............
A foggy start to the day in England, with sun to follow. Indian summer forecast for most of the coming week, to compensate for another dismal summer.
