I've read that the Libyan rebels have promised cheap oil to their "friends" the UK and France for helping them

Libya is a sovereign state, Gadaffi is the leader of that sovereign state, whether elected by distorted figures or by any other means.

one day it may come back to bit one on the bum when someone doesnt like the way the UK or USA or France et al are being run that the REBELS will be supported from outside.
