I was due to arrive in Benahavis to look at a coupe of properties next month and was shocked to see the wild fires there this morning on the BBC. Is this area a regular for wildfire or is it new?

I am of an age whereby I probably only have about 10 years left and this kind of thing worries me.

I would certainly do some research into that before committing myself to such a big purchase. Its not something that you want to have to think about.

Yes, I agree - this is a long-standing risk in Spain being made worse by climate change.

Conversely, I would also consider the opposite - do not buy where a gota fria can inundate you.

I think people need to be aware of the issues about living inland in rural areas....fires and flooding. Today the Spanish news is back to back reporting on the fires in different areas. Its is not uncommon but some of the fires are definitely the worst for many years. It is unseasonably hot at the moment and of course this adds to the likelihood of fires. Everyone expects more this summer. No area is safe- today fires are raging in the north, Zaragoza, Logroña, etc plus in andulcia. I would be extremely careful in buying a place close to dry forestal areas on expose parts where the wind can pick up. These fires spread at terrifying speeds. I'm also not sure what type of insurance you have but probably little in the case of acts of god or if it is deemed a risk zone.

Can only agree with others here and it's something you need to be aware of. I would never buy a property that is at the edge of a forest or bushland. You just need one idiot and the whole area is in flames and unfortunately there seem to be many of them. I don't know if anyone here actually watches Spanish TV but the pictures today are absolutely terrifying!!. There is a picture of a guy getting out of his car to take a photo near the fires and within a few seconds its is like a bomb exploding ...Unbelievable.

Yes, can be all sorts of causes from BBQs, and hot exhaust on trail bikes to arson - including pyromaniacs and those deliberately destroying woodland in order to seek planning permission to build.

Alicante hillsides have plenty of firebreaks and manned fire watch towers but I would not want to take the risk of losing my property and or life.
