Barcelona is up it's own arse and very overpriced IMO
However, trains are good to suburbs and towns not to far away.
Vilnova i la Geltru is a great little town on the coast just west of Sitges. Nice estuary like beach. Park etc. Fabulous mix of architectural styles on the coast road. Big supermarkets, cinema, great bars. Think of it as a 'poor mans Sitges'. Which it pretty much was in its day. About 40 minutes and €3 from Barcelona by train. Buses through the night. Trains stop at about 10.30PM. Plenty of rental options.
Or, go north into the mountains. I'm currently near Vic. Another town with all you need (including employment!). Very affordable. Nice old town with arcade surrounded central plaza - bars, terraces. Free WiFi everywhere. €4.90 from Barcelona (Arc de Triumf is most convenient station) about 40 minutes on fast train, an hour on the slow train. Trains every hour, more, or less.
Just 2 towns outside of Barcelona, but if you don't mind suburban barrios with real people doing real stuff and teenagers doing teenage stuff etc, then cheap studios can be found just a 20 minute train ride from the centre. These areas can look intimidating to foreign/alien visitors, but the whole of Spain is generally very safe. The suburbs have a good ethnic mix also, as do towns like Vic and Vilanova.
Spain is safe, but Barcelona is a world leader in new street crime techniques and technologies. Bag theft is accepted as a sport by perp's and police alike. You have been warned.
