softlad is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Bank account

I'm sure this one gets asked all the time but what is the cheapest bank account in Spain? I have an NIE but not a residencia (not sure if that is relevant). Not based in Spain but I visit 10/12 time a year. I have a small mortgage with Sabadell but they charge 30 euros a quarter. Must be something cheaper out there, surely? I never have more than 500 euros in the account. Thanks in advance.

We have a mortgage with Sabadell and have suggested closing our account however they say that it is not possible. We must make a standing order to pay the monthly amount from there.

You could get a Halifax credit card and use that for purchases and cash withdrawals. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cr...cards/#halifax

Hi we opened our sabadell account three years before we moved here with just a passport,it was a non resident account. This became very useful when we moved permanently here ,Can't remember the running costs we still have the same account and are very happy with it.

Try https://n26.com/en-eu/bank-account
They provide a spanish IBAN so you can pay all your Spanish direct debits.....all fee free. (you need a Spanish address to receive the debit card)

Any online account is FREE - look at OpenBank (Santander) or the online account with BBVA

No fee - that's why it's FREE.

The only payment you have to make is the once every two year non-resident tax certificate. The bank can do this and charge you or you can get it yourself.

Thats interesting the biannual fee from SABADELL WAS OVER €40 last time. I know you should be able to DIY however I have never seen an explanation of how to do that. The actual certificate cost less than €7 so worth doing if the more than 1 or 2 people. Just can’t find the idiots guide. Any tips snikpoh?

The point was that if the OP has a mortgage with Sabadell, he needs a bank account with them. He would have to switch the mortgage to avoid paying fees.

Ah, I didn't realise that you had to keep your current account if you had a mortgage. I suppose the O/P could ask Sabadell if they could change his account to the "basic" account at €36 per year, instead of the current €140 per year.......see https://www.bancsabadell.com/cs/Sate...0034843962/en/
