Ayamonte zoo.

I decided to have a look in the zoo when I was along that end of town this morning. Who looks after these animals and where would it be best to report the horrendous condition of the white tiger ? The poor thing is so emaciated and has an open wound on its foot plus can barely walk. No way should animals be allowed to live in the conditions of that zoo.

Do you remember the thread you started in July

Yes I remember the thread but it does not tell me anything I want to know after my first visit to the park today, unless I missed something in it.

I have added images to my gallery. If you are easily upset by the condition of animals I advise you do not look.

It was on TV recently that they had no money to feed the animals in Jerez zoo because the council is €30m in debt, and the staff at the aquarium in Almuñecar haven't been paid for months. They were relying on donations. It's tragic when innocent creatures become victims of the economic crisis.

Can you not report the Ayamonte zoo to SEPRONA? Or raise it with PACMA, the animal rights party?

SEPRONA, the animal welfare department of the Guardia Civil. You can make a denuncia and they will have to investigate.

The last Mayor resisted the closure some years ago when a campaign was mounted by the soft animal loving Brits and some improvements were made and some animals removed. Of course not enough was done and the Mayor has changed so this one might not fight as hard but I think if the campaign was led by Spanish nationals it might succeed now. In the meantime the denunciation via Seprona might stir their buts.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

After lots of routing around, emailing here there and anywhere, I have discovered the tiger belongs to Sevilla Zoo, been in contact with them and have now sent a photo of the state of the current tiger. If I read the e mail right they have had a problem with a tiger they gave to Ayamonte before.

I hope this is progress and help will now be given to the poor animal.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

The white tiger and the bear were removed this morning. There is now a normal tiger in the enclosure and 2 smaller bears in the bear enclosure.

Well done wench

I hope these animals are treated better.

Are these new additions or the same ones that were there a couple of years ago?

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

Having never been in the zoo prior to my original post I have no idea what used to be in there Fred. The zoo has had troubles since at least 2003 with conditons of both enclosures and animals.

Zoo Check have taken my info and images on board and wish to use them in their ongoing quest for better animals conditions here in Spain. I have some reading from them to do today.

I am hoping for information on whether the tiger was sick or just starving and where it is now. The lions look well fed, the bear sick/bored I don't know. If it also belonged to Sevilla Zoo then they maybe changed it for the 2smaller ones as well. They were pretty quick of their mark the last time they had a complaint about the condition of an animal.

Well done you! This proves that if people do something constructive instead of just sitting round complaining about how awful things are, they can sometimes make a change for the better.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

Visited zoo yesterday on a whim and the white tiger is in the enclosure ! he looked a little more mobile and as if the sores had been attended. I took a photo or 2 and walked round the bears then back and he was gone ! the normal tiger was back. I wondered if I had been seeing things lol but I had my sister with me. They obviously have pens out of sight, I have not worked out the layout yet. I am still in touch with the animal sanctury and Zoo Check. I am still hoping for info from local source and will be contacting Sevilla Zoo again.

[F]What an amazing job you are doing! Could not face going to the zoo due to your graphic description of both the animals and their living conditions. Is there anything that I could do to help you with your endeavors to try and get these poor creatures to a better living environment? Would it be helpful if more people complained to Seville Zoo with you? [/FONT]

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

If you saw went to the zoo and then could make a denunicia that would be a great help. I do think you would need to have first hand knowledge to be able to make a real report. Also if you have any contacts to the Mayor and find out if there is any way people could help with feeding costs. Any info on the tiger at all would be useful. The more people that are aware of the tigers condition and that of the bear I think, may meant somebody somewhere is connnected to the people who can help the tiger if he id not already getting what he needs.

Zoo Check are to be contacting their spanish colleagues, the Tiger Sanctuary are aware/ very concerend, they are waiting on any information I can get from Sevilla Zoo re the conditon of the white tiger, any illness and its age. If you got that from Sevilla Zoo that would very helpful. I have an e mail to send to them but they have not responded to my last one.

The person in charge of zoo appears to be on holiday I am waiting on their return for information.

I have my second home at esuri, and although I am not there at the moment, I too, like lush, would like to get involved with assisting you in getting the treatment of these wonderful animals addressed urgently. Please can you post the email address of any people, companies, organisations that I can email to support your quest in getting this sorted urgently. Well done captains wench on actively doing something about what you have seen.

I have a suggestion...................

Rather than go in and attack the 'Zoo' in a negative way we need to forge a plan that we can turn it into a positive. At the moment there are no funds not only to feed the poor animals but the staff are not getting paid either so therefore rather than have the zoo as a drain on resources for Ayamonte then we need to provide the Mayor with an alternative that could generate revenue. I do not want to broadcast that here so if anyone is interested then PM me and we can do this by email?????

I went to the Zoo the first time we were in Ayamonte many years ago and only went back last year as my grandaughter wanted to see the new-born zebra BUT it was very upsetting to see such magnificent animals in such poor conditions. Please include me in any efforts to make improvements there; the park is lovely and the staff I (tried) to speak to were pleasant but it is SO wrong to have bears, tigers and lions trapped in those small enclosures.

Lush .... I replied via email twice. I am getting nowhere with any contacts for the zoo, they won't talk. The Tiger Sanctuary are worried but they need information before they can help.

Sevilla Zooo the tigers owners also have not responded to my last 2 e mails.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

Please can you let me have the email contact address for ayamonte and Seville zoo please. The more emails they receive, the more might be able to be done. Parques Reunidos are a Madrid based entertainment group who own zoo's around the world, so I intend on contacting them also to try and get some action started as this thread has gone quiet and those animals are still suffering.anyone with another ideas, please let me have them. I am based in England and visit ayamonte on average 6 times a year. Thanks.

How about trying the Born Free Foundation they have an online form you can fill in on their website.
I have not seen the condition of the animals only know what I have read here but I will report and if enough others do it may help.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

Thanks lynn, I will complete and send. I have had been having an email conversation with a vet from Seville zoo today and hope to take it further- however we all need to be sending as many emails to as many wildlife/ zoo/animal welfare charities or organisations to bring someones attention to the plight of these fabulous creatures. If you pm your email address to me I will forward the emails I've sent/ received today from Seville zoo etc. Regards sarah

Well done, why didn't I think of that! Should have checked back. I have submitted complaint to them and Am over in Ayamonte next week and shall endeavour to go to zoo and some pics etc to send to them. The more people that report it the better.

Thanks jacytoo I have just completed the born free online form too. The more people that vocalise, the better. I'm over on 28th feb, so I too will visit and take photos and talk to the keepers and see what they want us to do too, let's keep the emails to the different animal welfare flowing!!

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

Tried to visit the zoo on Saturday but appeared to be closed, so unfortunately could not get in to get any pictures, and am now back in UK. The best I could do was get some pics of the monkeys through the glass front of their enclosure. They looked bored stiff! So if anyone living there and has more opportunity to do so can get some, I had a reply from born free foundation who said they would like some. They are already aware of the zoo and animals situation having had a number of complaints, and have visited some years ago which led to some improvements I.e what they have now!

Sarah brads Feb 5th 2013 5:50 pm

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

I too have had a reply from born free foundation and I passed the info onto the vet in Seville zoo. It seems they are very worried about the food situation and are liasing with ABBA( not he group!) who are the RSPCA equivalent to see what they can find out. I'm out at esuri on 28th so will try and get some photos, in the meantime anyone who reads this , please complete the born free form on jacktoo's attachment above.

Re: Ayamonte zoo.

In all my visits in the last 3 weeks I have not seen the white tiger. The animals all looked throughly bored or sleeping. I have seen one zoo keeper on 2 visits, one time he was watching stupid spanish people feeding the deer cheesy wotsits and sticky sweeties !!!! DUH It does say at the door NOT to feed the animals. On that visit there was also a middle aged spanish coule were feeding the parrots fruit and seeds BUT they were also poking and annoying the birds and laughing at their reactions. On the other visit he was standing by the zebras, the official looking man I saw at the tiger and lions approached him and he went off with him.

A programme of education is needed from school age upwards ! If that zoo charged school parties for educational visits with talks on the individual aniamls there. They could generate money for food and care. Also if they had a nominal charge they may help stop the idiots I saw there on the last visit as an added benefit to raising money. They could have a secure box on the wall that allows the gate to open. No need to have a manned box for entry.
